Hi, everyone.
I am a junior and I got a 103.5 on my 2012 AMC 12 B test and I am preparing for the AIME B. I know there isn't a cut-off score that will gaurantee your admission to these top schools but I want to know some scores of those who are in MIT or Caltech. Also please say something about the AMC 12 and AIME score you think that can impress the admission officer and support your application.
Thanks in advance.

to impress the admission officer a little bit, you need at least a distinguished honor roll (like 114 or something) on AMC 12. To impress your admission officer more, get a 10 on AIME. To impress your even more, get a 21+ on usamo. and finally, if you want math contest to be the major thing that gets you into MIT or Caltech, get into blue/black MOSP

Even just taking the AIME stands out a bit. However, for MIT/Caltech-applicants take AIME, and you will want to try to make it to USAMO in order to stand out. I got a 13/42 on 2010 USAMO and made it to MIT (even though I blew 2011 AIME I…that was a tough one).

However, these don’t “guarantee” admission. Qualifying to USAMO, MOP, or even IMO will significantly increase your chances of admission (one forum I read said ~70% of USAMO qualifiers who applied to MIT got accepted). These are definitely impressive accomplishments, and you should highlight these in your application, but also make sure your grades and interview are good.

An MIT admission officer stated

This was from 2011 so the statistics probably changed but not by much.

So it sounds like you are virtually guaranteed acceptance if you make at least MOP and are towards the top of your class, haven’t screwed up at all.

USAMO definitely boosts your application, but you still need to make the rest of your application shine.

As lovenerds said, a score of ~10 will definitely impress admissions and also most likely means you made USAMO, at least.

But note that plenty of kids get into MIT and Caltech without ever taking the AMCs or even doing well on the AMC 12/10.

I never did well on AMC12 (top score 111), even though I scored 11 on AIME and 13/42 on 2010 USAMO. Like cortana431 said, AIME is not all that impressive but it still distinguishes from a good 70-80% of applicants. A gold medal at IMO, on the other hand, almost guarantees your acceptance (unless you have F’s in literature and history).

@lovenerds note that those arnet necessarily tiered correctly.
This year i missed distinguished honor roll for AMC but 10 on AIME and USAMO qualification.

@rspence lol I know what you mean by when you say the 2011 AIME 1 was hard… I usually get like 6s and 7s on practice tests, but on that test I got a 1… lol

My sentiments exactly.

AIME is nothing considering even I took it a few times in high school. I think my senior year, 7 kids at my public high school made it. Make USAMO first.
