I’ve always thought that Corona is… much better than it needs to be, if you get my meaning: the people who drink it tend to be non-beer-drinkers, who’re just having it to go with fajitas, or whatever. But in it’s own right, I think it’s a pretty decent lager, though not on a par with the microbrewery ales etc. Funnily enough, Coors have just started a big marketing campaign here in the UK. I can’t see it catching on, though (thank god).

Agreed on the lyche sake, though it can be a bit sweet. Have you tried Soju?

rorshach, where are you living? In the UK? or have you moved somewhere here in the States? But location does matter, because what’s available is definitely limited by distribution issues (ie, you can’t get New Belgium products like Fat Tire on the East Coast, or Yuengling or Dogfish Head most anywhere west of the Mississippi).

What type of beers do you typically like. I promise you there are some great beers in the US (and Canada).

A few great, widely distributed breweries include:
Sierra Nevada (go with the Pale Ale to start)
Anchor (widely considered the founder of the craft brewery revival, Anchor Steam is a classic)
Unibroue (Canadian, Quebec no less, but FANTASTIC - can’t go wrong with Maudite, Tres Pistoles or my personal favorite La Fin du Monde)
Goose Island (not sure if they make it to the coasts, but Chicago based with a very solid lineup).

Rogue Brewery is pretty widely distributed too, but I think it’s HIGHLY overrated, but they have an huge variety of styles and you might find something you like.

Let me know where you’re at (if in the US), and what you like, and I’ll promise to find you something worth your time and money.

And on the topic of Corona…just an example of how the average layperson has no idea what good beer is. There are so many Mexican beers that are so much better - Pacifico, Negro Modelo, Bohemia, and Dos Equis all are head and shoulders above. Corona Light might be the worst beer on the planet…

Evidently you’ve never tried Castlemaine XXXX, bigred :).

I live in the UK, but will hopefully be moving to the US in a year or so. The northeast looks most likely, but I really don’t know at this point - I’ll be sure to give you a PM when I find out.

I actually haven’t heard of Soju before. I’ll see if I can find it and try it, especially if it’s sweet.

Gotta agree with Miller High Life.

Shiner is the ****

High gravity

Dogfishhead Brewery makes a lot of good ones
New Belgium
Blue Moon, as well as their winter lineup.
Goose Island
Firestone Brewing (California)
Shocktop is one of my recent favorites.

Another vote for New Belgium! It started as a microbrew in my hometown of Fort Collins, CO but their Fat Tire beer is available almost anywhere in the US now.
