American City with the Most Colleges

Which American city has the most colleges/universities? I guess it becomes tricky if you include "very near the city" status. I think Boston and Atlanta are the two largest, though I could be wrong.

Boston (in/around/close):

Harvard
MIT
Boston University
Boston College
Northeastern
Tufts
Emerson
Simmons
Wellesley (close enough)
Brandeis (close enough)
Suffolk
UM Boston

Atlanta:

Emory
GA State
GA Tech
Spelman
Morehouse
Morris Brown
Clark Atlanta
Oglethorpe
Agnes Scott

Chicago and DC both get an Honorable Mention:

Chicago:

UChicago
Northwestern
DePaul
Loyola
UI Chicago
Columbia College

D.C.:

Georgetown

Boston and Philadelphia

Chicago has many more, including:
Northeastern
IIT (Illinois Inst of Technology)
Robert Morris
Roosevelt
City Colleges of Chicago
North Park
Chicago State
East-West
…and too many to mention in the surrounding suburbs

in addition to the aforementioned:
Northwestern
DePaul
Loyola
UI Chicago
Columbia College

New York probably has the most colleges and especially so if you include the surrounding area (Newark, and NY suburbs - which are A LOT)

Boston probably isn’t too far behind

I’ve heard that it’s Boston, with 53 four-year colleges and universities in the metro area.

The Philadelphia metro area has over 80 institutions of higher learning (including, e.g., 6 medical schools, with a 7th soon to be opened):

[Campus Visit/ Philadelphia .::. International Students’ College Information](http://www.onebigcampus.com/int_city_for_students.html)

Definitely one of the largest collections of colleges and universitites in the country.

Los Angeles has quite a few:

Colleges directly in the city:
University of California–Los Angeles
University of Southern California
Occidental College
American Jewish University
Loyola Marymount University
Mount St. Mary’s College
California State University–Los Angeles

Additional colleges in the county:
California Institute of Technology
Pepperdine University
California Lutheran University
California State University–Long Beach
California State Polytechnic University–Pomona
California State University–Northridge
Woodbury University
California State University–Dominguez Hills
Harvey Mudd
Pomona
Claremont Mckenna
Pitzer
Scripps

Yesterday, I read in a travel guide that Atlanta has 30 institutions of higher education. It also mentioned that the most prestigious of the 30 is Emory ;). Just saying.

DC also has Galudet, UDC, Trinity College, and more in the suburbs.

New York City, anyone?

Columbia
Bard
Barnard
Pratt
St. Johns
Mount Saint Vincent
LIM
Fordham
Manhattan College
Pace
NYU

Baruch, Brooklyn, City, CSI, Hunter, John Jay, Lehman, Edgar Evers, Tech, Queens, York … and the community colleges- Manhattan, Bronx, Queensborough, Hostos, Kingsborough, Laguardia

Okay, sure, you probably haven’t heard of a lot of these, but that isnt the point of the topic, is it? :)

I am going to take a stab at Chicago.

^ Still doesn’t exceed Philly’s 80+ (although it might if you can come up with another 40 or so  ).

Tulsa:

University of Tulsa
Tulsa Community College
Oral Roberts University

I win!

lol i heard oral roberts requires students to take fitness exam every semester

The lists are not comparable. That same website says 80 but their own list shows only 50: http://www.onebigcampus.com/college_philly.htmPhilly</a>. And they are able to achieve that many only by including grad programs such as schools of optometry, medical schools, and “colleges” like DeVry, which the Boston list excludes.

^ From the Bryn Mawr College site:

[Bryn Mawr College | Philadelphia and the Region |Student Life](http://www.brynmawr.edu/studentlife/philadelphia.shtml)

If you want to dispute that statement, take it up with Bryn Mawr! :p

Minor correction: Cal State Northridge is in the City of Los Angeles.
