OK, someone must know the real value of entering this school for a musical theatre major. My daughter is accepted and ecstatic with a partial scholarship, but after visiting, it seems small, and I question the competitiveness of the audition process. Is it just me or is there an unusually high acceptance rate? I am not interested in a student mill. At 17 she is already successful in regional theatre and vocal performance. She is looking for the next step to a more national stage audience and definitely wants more seasoning in school. It seems hard to stray far from more traditional name schools like UCLA, USC, or Yale. Help! Expensive choices await. This is part of my due diligence.

It is truly not too selective to get into AMDA. There are many threads about AMDA on the MT forum on CC and you should do a search there. You may also want to check the graduation rate at AMDA.

Not knocking AMDA but it is not at all the same type of education provided at UCLA, USC, or Yale. Does your D want any liberal arts courses? AMDA is more of a stand alone conservatory. UCLA is highly selective for MT and while it is has similarities to a BFA program, it is actually a BA degree (nothing wrong with that but pointing out how these four schools differ greatly). USC only has a MT Minor. Yale is a BA degree and it is in Theater, not MT, except they have added MT courses/workshops to their curriculum and there are many wonderful MT production opportunities on campus as well. I know highly talented MT students who have chosen to attend Yale but this degree program will not be like a BFA in MT. Curious as to why your daughter isn’t applying to bFA in MT programs. Does she want to stay in CA? Have you looked into UC-Irvine?

Typically, a student who is interested in attending AMDA is NOT the same sort of student who is interested in Yale, USC, or UCLA. Your D needs to figure out what her selection criteria is first. BFA in MT? BM in MT? BA in MT? BA in theater with MT Minor? Stand alone conservatory with no liberal arts? BA in Theater with no audition but many MT opportunities? Depending on the answer to that, a list would be built. It is very late at this point in the year, however.

AMDA is a two year program that has added a BFA option in LA. If in NYC, it has an option to get a college degree at The New School after the two years at AMDA.

Please see all the wisdom found in CC’s special forum on Musical Theater.

There are also forums for other specialized majors, such as Acting, Music, Film, Studio Art and more.

To find: click on Discussion Home (top left of this page). Scroll down below all the named universities/colleges to an area called “College Majors.” In your situation, click on Musical Theater, as well as Drama/Acting.

^^This member also asked about this already on the Theater Majors forum (not the MT one though). I do suggest searching the MT Forum where there are many discussions about AMDA.

Also, OP, you mentioned in your other post that your D has the highest level of academic credentials. If so, I wonder if she’d be happy at AMDA. Is there a reason she is not seeking many of the fine BFA in MT programs? It is too late to apply to some but not to others. For instance, apps are due for NYU/Tisch on Jan. 1 but you’d have to check if the audition dates are still available. I get the feeling you may be located in CA, and if so, they hold auditions in LA. Also, there are schools that hold auditions at LA Unifieds (NYU is separate).

To my knowledge, it is pretty easy to get into AMDA. Not so for any other BFA in MT program, however.
