I have attended high school in the United States and am a high school senior with a 2.8 GPA. Which schools will most likely accept me? I have taken many AP and honours courses. The reason why my GPA is low is because I had a rough junior year with home life and hospitalisation. Price is not a problem, neither is location. I have been looking into UBC, University of Calgary and University of Alberta. It would also be helpful if you could give me information on the likelihood of my acceptance at those universities. Thank you for your assistance!

Sorry to say, but your chances are pretty much nil…

Is your GPA weighted or un-weighted? What fields (major[s]) do you want to study? Have you taken ACT/SAT? With SAT, some universities require SAT II (subject tests). Can your counselor write a letter stating the extenuating circumstances for your performance in junior year?

There may be other universities that you can be admitted as a freshman.

Perhaps, others can comment on the difficulty of transferring later in UG program into one of the 3 universities that OP may be interested in attending.

I would be studying psychology. My SAT score is 1550 composite and I plan to take it again. I can have my guidance counsellor write about my junior year. My GPA is weighted.

U Calgary psychology: High reach (a minimum of 3.2 is pretty much required; my last verdict for U Calgary was for Arts w/o psychology)

A 2.8 and a 1550 as an international applicant puts you as a high reach for all three schools you listed.

SAT composite score of 1550 taken in 2012 would be placed at 57th percentile.

Have you taken a sample ACT test to see if you are better at taking ACT? some people score well on ACT, some on SAT, and very few do quite well in both.

UBC Arts faculty recalculates the weighted GPA into un-weighted GPA to normalize differences in grading at various US high schools. Also, for each full year of AP courses, they add 0.5 to the unweighted grade. For ex. If you took AP English, and scored B grade, they would add a 0.5 to 3.0 (=B) ; your new score would be 3.5. Also, they count only core academic courses that were taken for a full year term… i.e. no gym, typing, band etc. would be counted in re-calculating GPA. They also consider the courses taken in the first semester of 12th grade for admissions purposes. You may want to call their international admissions office to verify & get further details.

In addition, perhaps you may want to consider other universities that are not as difficult to be admitted.

Or, if you really want to get into the 3 universities mentioned, you may want to explore the possibility of seeking admission at a college in Canada (similar to community college in the US), and transfer into one of the three universities.
