Yeah I have no idea, I’m just confused…definitely not staying on this waitlist.

“Waitlisted at American, but accepted to NYU…”
same here

I am surprised as well. My son is waitlisted as well and SATs were 1470/1600 and 2270/2400. He is in the top 2.5% of his graduating class (competitive private school), has extracurriculars. Puzzled here.

@People Waitlisted – Did you guys officially visit or anything…? I did nothing of the like and I think that was why I was waitlisted. Haha, idk though. DEF not staying on, though. Can’t afford it, anyways! + got into schools I would rather go to than American.

ANYWAYS… me.

Yes, we visited last spring. Was not his top choice, however, just recently, he said he would def. consider it if they offered money. He applied to schools EA and all three offered him pretty nice scholarships. This is both disappointing and surprising, but from what I hear, you just never know. It is very competitive!!

For those of you with high stats, it’s possible the Adcom didn’t think you’d attend AU even if admitted, applying only for a “safety school”.

Oh… okay then. Weird! I know people with similar stats who got substantial merit aid!

and… wait, does anyone else think it’s odd that they waitlist AND do spring admission…?

I mean, I know UMCP (at least) does Spring admission in lieu of waitlist.

I know someone who got into Northwestern and rejected from American. Maybe a lot more folks slipped through the cracks this year??
And @ sammy3: That’s really weird. I have similar stats (2270/2400 & 1510/1600) and wasn’t waitlisted. Maybe the admissions officers were especially grumpy this year. Or they pulled a MIT. :o

@newyork2010

American is not my first choice, It is my second behind George Washington University. Then third is Drexel.

I was also waitlisted at American today. Pretty shocked to be honest…

Stats:

GPA: 3.79 UW / 3.94 W
SAT: 2090 (700 CR, 700 M, 690 W)

Gender: Male
School Type: Competitive Private

Lots of AP and Honors classes as well as extracurriculars.

I did apply there as a safety (and had no interaction whatsoever with the school) and never intended to go there, so I am guessing this is what largely played into the waitlist decision.

Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted!

Dang, seems like a lot of people with high grades and scores are getting waitlisted/rejected this year. If I had to guess, I would say it’s probably the Tufts effect. Admissions saw your high grades and scores and assumed (rightfully i would guess), that you were not really serious about attending, and were only using American as a safety. For that reason, they decided to offer spots to people who they viewed as more likely to attend. But that’s just my guess.

In reviewing the comments of those that were waitlisted or denied at American University
the level of competition to gain admission has markedly increased over thge last 3-4 years.
In the view of many the efforts of American University’s leadership to elevate the presitige and reputation of the school has been very succesful. American continues to recruit top
professors and adjuncts in their fields, the school has a stable financial footing and clearly
the “word has gotten out” about the quality of the education that American delivers. In fact, American’s international serivice, public affairs and business programs are some of the most elite in the United States.

The entering class statistics appear poised for further escalation over the coming years and so the view that American has evolved into one of the most selective schools is confirmed by the quality of students that are not only being admitted but enrolling.

I doubt it is “Tufts” effect. If you look at the posted data from the 2008-2009 admissions year (on the website), you will find well over a thousand applicants with SATs in excess of 2000 (and some more than 2200) or GPAs of 3.8 or above who were rejected (let alone waitlisted.)

Like all colleges, American is building a “class” rather than simply admitting individuals. For whatever reason, they didn’t see fit to offer many candidates a place in it. But there are lots of wonderful colleges and universities out there, and for the vast majority, students turn out to be happy wherever they end up attending.

Add me to the waitlisted and puzzled lot. American was never towards the top of my list, so I wasn’t upset, just a bit confused. I was also accepted to a few schools that are definitely considered more competitive. C’est la vie, I guess.

Sorry, I thought I had it on there, but I was wait listed. BUt I was accepted to more competitive and prestigious schools, and put on wait list at one of the best. HOlding out for them!

I applied Early Decision, so I’ve known for quite a while.

SAT:
Reading - 700
Math - 500
Writing - 640

WGPA: 4.4

Rank: 55 out of 270.

Extra: Debate, Band, U. I. L. Academics.

I had great recommendation letters and pretty good essay (if I do say so myself).

Intended Major: International Studies and French with a minor in Chinese.

AU was my first and really only choice. I also applied Early Action to Austin College in Texas and was accepted, but it’s always been AU.

I was also waitlisted. very surprised I got into a more selective school which I will attend. but I thought I would get into AU maybe with a little merit.

It would be interesting to see if those of you waitlisted and admitted to more “selective” schools showed any interest in AU other than filling out the application.

I was accepted into the spring semester with an invitation to the WMP…but if I had too choose I’d go to the other safety school of mine; Skidmore College. I received no financial aid; plus Skidmore seems to be a more competitive school for what I intend to study- and they offered about half off the tuition in financial aid not including Federal loans. I’m also waiting on 3 of my targets, having been rejected from one (Macalester), and waiting on three others (Occidental; Oberlin; and Wesleyan)…and I haven’t heard from any of my reaches.

I liked American, but now there isn’t a compelling reason for me to consider going. What do you guys think?
