American University Class of 2014 RD thread

My S is a student at AU, but for what you want and what you were offered, I’d say do Skidmore for now. AU is not that strong in liberal arts.

I’m still holding out for my two remaining realistic choices; Occidental and Oberlin; but I originally looked at American because of the opportunities of a decent school in DC (and because I was thinking of double-majoring in Political Science as well)…but I don’t think it would be worth it. Do you think it would be for a History/Poly-Sci double major looking to go into law/ go to law school?

Interestingly, four people at my competitive private school were accepted ED- one person to Kogod; one to SOC; one to CAS , and one to SPA… only the last person had stats close to mine and no one had the SAT scores … does AU fill ED and is that why I was offered only Spring 2011 admission with the Washington Mentorship Program at the Tenley campus for the Fall 2010 semester?

Did you show any interest in attending AU, other than filling out the application?

No, AU doesn’t even get close to filling ED. AU has just been getting very much more competitive. (and, if you look at the 2008-2009 stats on their website, you’d see that they rejected lots of folks with your stats and above last year.)

But if you think of yourself as a liberal arts major, you really should go to a liberal arts college.

@ hello5

Yes, because I talked to the state rep when she visited my school and asked questions; as well as took a tour of campus and met the admissions officers. I wanted a safer school on my list that offered immense and diverse opportunities; and I did like American.

@ mini

Is AU really that pre-professional?

The majority of AU students are in SIS and Kogod, with smaller numbers in the schools of communication and public affairs. Liberal arts students are a distinct minority (about a third), with science students a tiny proportion. And liberal arts includes all the language majors, who usually have minors or double majors in SIS, business, etc.

AU is very, very different than GWU.

Hmm… that’s interesting and thank you very much for the information!

I didn’t know that; I always envisioned it as a “liberal arts university” …One of my best friends was accepted ED to the SPA; with the same intent as I to go to graduate school afterwards, probably law…and 3 other people from my school also applied ED; one for CAS /Psych…

I never liked GWU… a bit too preppy for me (a non preppy guy who has been in northeastern prep schools his whole life).

Oh well… thanks for the info. I guess if it comes down to my safeties; I’m choosing Skidmore College.

I also got accepted (yay!)

Reading the posts, however, I feel a bit guilty. I was accepted, but to the spring term like skeete. My stats are definitely not as good as some of the ones I’ve read on here, however I suppose my essay was good as well as my recommendations. I have about a 3.4 gpa, upward trend this year (however, they didn’t consider that when I was accepted as far as I know). I’ve never been in varsity sports, but I worked as a youth mentor over the summer last year that was funded by the obama stimulus package (I’m guessing this might have given me a leg up…?). Again, I don’t know exactly what they saw in me but I’m glad I was accepted! I don’t think I will do the WMP program that I was invited to because of costs, however I do think I will attend American in the spring.

I was also accepted to the WMP program… when I read the letter I assumed it was a separate program that wasn’t very good/ hard to get into… but looking into it it looks pretty tight. You can intern right when you start? Cool… I didn’t have amazing stats, although compared to the rest of the schools I applied to I thought I would get into American

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations/Scholarships,etc:
I wish other schools would give as much money as AU.
Also accepted into College University Program.

A 32 ACT is not all that unusual anymore for AU and there are many other considerations that are factored into decisions. Scholarships, from what I have seen, have a tendency to be a bit random (especially for females, if this is the case) so I wouldn’t have counted on having received one. Tulane is known for doling out big scholarships, but their tuition is higher, too, so I wouldn’t put too much merit into using that as a gauge vs AU.

My daughter was accepted. I never really doubted she would get in, but it seems like many qualified kids have been put on WL??
She has a GPA 4.0, SAT 2200, ACT 33
Got a great merit scholarship and invitation to HP

My daughter got accepted, also a few weeks back, with excellent merit scholarship.

-Comments: I am not going to go…I’m waiting on one remaining target and if I’m not accepted there; I will attend Skidmore College; which has more of a liberal-arts focus.

I’m accepted as well. I was a little disappointed however. I had an interview with my admissions counselor a little under a year ago. She not only assured me I would be accepted, but also said I had a very good chance of getting merit aid and getting into the honors program. I had seen the stats for honors, and mine are a little under that, so I was surprised, and became increasingly hopeful. I’ve received my admissions packet with no money, and no invitation to join honors. It feels a little like a slap in the face. It’s also my most expensive school now by about 12 K. Probably won’t be attending.
