American University Honors College

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently decided that I want to apply early decision to American University because it has the program I want. I also want to apply to the honors college and Fredrick Douglass scholars as well. Can any students or people in general give me advice on admission? American is already a very good university, I’m nervous that the honors college would be impossible for me to get into. I plan to be a foreign language and communications media major, and for the Fredrick Douglass scholars program I am a first generation student as well. Could anybody also tell me about the programs if they’re in them? I feel like the website paints such a broad picture. I just want to know what people think of the honors college because it’s competing with the UAlbany and UAB honors colleges for me. Help is appreciated. Thanks!

Both the Honors College and FDDS are very competitive programs/scholarships. I don’t know your stats, but please know that it’s kind of like getting into an Ivy in terms of the acceptance rate. Most of the applicants will fall in the accepted range of stats and then AU will fill the spots to make a group of diverse individuals. There are 25 students accepted into the Honors Program and 5 of them are FDDS. Many applicants to the honors program are offered spots in AU Scholars or Community-Based Research Scholars. So apply and hope for the best, but know that many qualified applicants are not offered spots in the Honor’s Program. I think the essays are very important, so make sure to focus your effort on those.
