@Napafolie thanks so much!! i’ve been doing this process by myself and it’s been stressing me out a lot. AU is the last uni I hear from and it’s the only one that gives their answer through mail so it’s been so nerve-wracking. hopefully I get in!!
Received my letter in Colorado two days ago, was put on the waitlist.
Stats—
GPA: 4.0 and valedictorian Unweighted (out of 4.0), 4.26 and ranked 6th Weighted, class size of ~600
Classes: 9 AP and 6 Honors
SAT: 1550 (taken once)
ACT: 34 (taken once)
Letters of rec: Teachers let me read them and they were very nice 10/10
Essays: The general Common App essay was awesome story about how I saved the Chinese program at my school, I chose to write the optional essay, I wrote the American specific Common App essay about an experience in a class of mine
Extracurriculars: President of DECA, President of FBLA, President Chinese Honor Society, in charge of National Honor Society, started Culinary Club, run a community service club, run a mental health advocacy group, actor in many plays/help produce musicals, a few other clubs I’m less involved in, 300+ service hours on transcript, part time job, math tutor, very involved with my church youth group and another Christian group
Awards: DECA International Top Test Score, Varsity Letter in 5 activities, various school-level academic awards, Student of the Semester
Demonstrated Interest: Campus visit, emails to admissions
Other schools I’ve been accepted to (early and regular): Georgetown, Washington University St. Louis, University of Denver, a few state schools that are easy to get into
Really surprised that I wasn’t accepted given that I’ve gotten into more competitive schools and my stats are above the average of accepted students. I was genuinely interested in American but I guess they though I wanted them as a safety. My only guess is that I didn’t demonstrate enough interest, although it is hard for me to do demonstrate more as there aren’t many opportunities to do so in Colorado.
Did your teachers include in their recommendations how modest you are?!
I’m international and I never received a formal email informing me of their admissions decision, although they invited me to their ‘New Eagle Day’ so I knew I had gotten in.
Should I follow up with them and ask where my formal decision email is? My friends at my school haven’t, either.
Daughter was accepted (she received the email Thursday night about New Eagles Day but official packet came in the mail Friday afternoon)!
Accepted as a BA Public Health Major and got into the Public Health Scholars Program (3 year degree) as well as being offered to participate in the combined BA+MA 4 year program
GPA UW 3.39 (don’t know weighted GPA as school does not weight)
SAT 1300 (630 math 670 English)
Class rank is unknown as school doesn’t rank
Some extracurriculars including Girl Scouts, soccer, indoor and outdoor track (as a captain), student leadership, lots of work experience, and clubs
4 APS (European history (4), Biology (4), Micro/Macro Econ (TBD), Psychology (TBD)) and took all honors throughout high school
Was not able to tour campus/interview prior to applying but did have some demonstrated interest!
Common app essay, AU supplementary essays and public health essay were all very strong. She’s very excited! Merit money and aid was enough for her to attend next fall! Good luck everyone!
Has anyone received notification by mail that they were accepted to AU, but NOT to the honors program?
When my daughter submitted her honors application, she was notified via email that honors decisions would not be released until April 1. When no mention of the honors program was included in her acceptance letter, we were prepared to wait. However, others are reporting here that they have been accepted.
I suspect that they are only notifying those accepted at this time and not others, but would like to know for sure.
@Mickman - there’s another thread under FDDS program where someone said that on a webinar a couple of weeks ago honors and FDDS candidates had already been notified:
@washdcgorl LOL im the complete opposite of you kinda- Georgetown was top choice, then GW, then AU. I got deferred from Georgetown, rejected from GW, and accepted to AU. Really surprised and upset with GW as my stats and ecs were above their general “standards”, not to mention a few of my friends w lower SAT scores got in. Happy for them but yeah, was pretty sad that I didn’t get in. Also doesn’t AU have a lower acceptance rate than GW? It’s all so confusing. ):
My poor daughter is completely devastated… She got wait listed by her 1st, 2nd, 3rd choices
American, George Washington, Fordham.
Only accepted to safety schools. She doesn’t know what happened.
Wait listed
her stats:
PoliSci major
3.9/4 UW GPA
4.3/5 W GPA
1380 SAT
Class Rank 17
6 AP classes (all 5’s so far) and 3 honors classes
4 years foreign language
2 campus visits, demonstrated interest with communication with admissions rep and webinars
Okay EC’s member of a couple clubs, founder of one.
3 good rec letters
100+ volunteer hours
Personal essay was about overcoming personal issues(don’t want to post publicly)
I feel bad, she received 3 scholarship offers from safety schools but now does not look at that as a major accomplishment, only the failure of wait lists. She’s worked so hard and now she feels it was for nothing.
@GregHal please say to your daughter I am on the same boat! I am majoring in Poli Sci and I have similar stats with her and I got rejected to NYU, Fordham and Brandeis. I am still waiting for my decision from American, but it’s not looking good. Let her know that her getting into safeties are still a big deal! And she can always apply for transfers, like I am going to do. Best of luck to her future, she seems like a bright motivated young woman!
I was accepted into Fall Mentorship Program 2019 and Spring 2020 admittance.
Does anyone know if I’m suppose to register and enroll wayyy before May 1st to secure my spot for the fall mentorship program (im mostly interested in the washington mentorship)? Because I’m pretty sure that I’m probably gonna be making my final decision in like the last week of April…
If you have attended the mentorship program and are current AU student, or if you know about this mentorship program, any help would be great!
@greghal Lots of strong students with great stats - where the schools that they applied to should have been “target” schools - are now posting that they’ve been waitlisted or outright rejected (or offered midyear placement). It’s nothing she did, it’s a symptom of how insane the college admission process has become. With so many kids applying to an ever-growing number of schools in order to hedge their bets, it’s resulting in more kids being waitlisted at schools that probably, just a few years ago, they would have been accepted at without a problem.
I read a book a few years ago when my oldest was applying to college called “Where You Go is Not Who You’ll Be” by Frank Bruni. It was a really great book that put this craziness into perspective and reminded the reader that it’s not where you start that matters - it’s where you finish. 3 scholarships are a major accomplishment in my book!
@asdfk000 -same with my d. She’s still trying to understand the fall mentorship as well! Keep in touch! We are hopefully calling today to ask some questions!
@asdfk000 and @penny1234 , As per the AU FAQ…
What is the deadline for accepting the admission offer?
The official deadline for reserving a spot in the Washington Mentorship Program is May 1, 2019. To select the program, you will need to complete an Enrollment Agreement and Housing Application form, found on the myAU Portal, and submit a $600 deposit. Please note that this deposit will be applied to your bill in Spring 2020, not to the fall Mentorship semester.
How many students can participate?
The Washington Mentorship Program has between 140 - 175 students on average. Deposits are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
@Mickman - There was a reminder email on 11th March from AU that said “Please know that if you applied for and are accepted to any of our 3-year degree programs, the AU Honors Program, or the Community-Based Research Scholars Program, you will receive notification of acceptance to one of these programs within your admission letter.” - My D accepted into AU but did not receive honors. I believe FDDS and several scholar programs are different from honors and that notification will be on April 1st.
@katecarpok correct - that’s what they told us when we visited
Thank you @kidded for this information. It is my daughter who gets the emails, so that explains things.
Let me know if you got any additional infos!
Is someone still waiting for their decision letter ?
