American University - School of Communication

Does anyone know at student in AU's School of Communication? My D has been accepted there but there aren't any posts regarding the school on the AU page and no one has replied to my post on the Visual Media program. My D is trying to choose between a school that has offered her photography in their art department. She loves the school and had a great experience on her overnight visit. She will be going to sit in on some classes at AU. Being in DC, it will be great for internships, but I'm concerned that there's not enough of a "campus" feel. Is it more important for me to focus on the program and the job potential or where she'll be happiest at the school that doesn't have as strong a program or connections for internships. I'm so torn.....

Why should you be torn? This seems a prime question for your d. to figure out for herself.

Isn't it great to have choices?

Freshstart19, what does your daughter think? Without knowing the other school, I'd want to be sure there was enough depth in the photography program offered through the art department, so that she wasn't running out of offerings by her senior year.

My daughter considered AUs SOC last year and was quite impressed with the conversations she had with faculty when she visited. She wasn't quite as impressed with the random students she met (not necessarily from the SOC), but they were still a contender until we received the FA package (they gapped us by about $8000).

After attending a Reception for Admitted Students last night, my D is definitely interested in exploring her options at AU. However, she is very concerned that it might be too diverse for her. She's gone to small, Catholic schools since kindergarten and is afraid this might be too much of a change for her. She does like DC as she attended a photojournalism class last summer at the Corcoran. The course offerings for Photgography at Loyola which she loves are quite extensive. The concern is that the internships that would be available to her in DC are amazing. It would be much easier to get those internships through the connections at AU. Of course, everything could change in an instant if she ever hears from Fordham:-)

If your D is considering a Communications career, being comfortable with "diversity" will be very valuable. We visited AU and had the feeling there were a variety of types on campus that should provide a range of social choices. There would definitely be one or more Catholic organizations of some kind she could join.

here are two from their website:

Catholic Community Choir and Ensemble

Catholic Student Association:
<<Welcome to the AU Catholic Community!

Aside from your role as an Eagle, we would also like to welcome you to
the largest faith community at American University! We're here to help
you make new friends, find yourself, and find Christ in Washington. >>

Pyewacket, I had the same conversation with my D about being a photographer and diversity. In her head, it makes sense. She's still quite nervous, though. I will definitely explore the organizations that you mentioned with her on their website. Thanks!

I still wish I could who knows anyone in SOC....

OK--from the website --these are the advisors for SOC undergraduates. I would send them one group e-mail-- simply stating your daughter's concerns ( or she should write the e-mail herself!) ask them if they could provide a few names and e-mail addresses of students who would "chat" or e-mail with your D!
