American University?

So my top choice is American University in D.C. My grades have been miserable so I'm hoping that somehow I can pull it out. I have a relative who is a professor at American's law school, and he said I should have no problem getting in. Below is my information:

Freshman/Sophomore Cumulative GPA: 2.93 on a 4.0 scale. (This is incredibly low, but I had a lot of problems these two years and missed over two months of school. I'll write about this in my essays)

Current Junior year grades: Straight A's :D

SAT: 1860 (690 Reading, 590 Writing, 580 Math) (I'll be taking the SAT's again, and I should bring them up to around 2000 or higher easily).

ACT: I'm taking the ACT on April 14

SAT Subject Tests: I'm taking the Literature and Math I exams on May 5th, and I may take the German one as well.

AP: I'm taking AP English Language and Composition this year, and next year I'm taking AP Economics and I think one other.

Extra Curricular's:

Sunday School Teacher (2 years)

Township Rec Basketball Coach

Police Department Volunteer

Head of Yearbook Photography Staff (9th-11th grade, and I will be again as a senior)

Photojournalist for the local paper (I've been a photojournalist and op-ed columnist for the past year)

I started my own photography business when I was a freshman, and I've kept it going, it's pretty successful!

Model UN (I've been on the Model UN team for two years, you can only start it as a sophomore in our school. I've won awards at every conference I've been to, and I'll run for president of the club this spring for next year)

Mens Select Chorus (9th-10th grades)

Volunteer at local community art center

Congressional Award for Youth (I've achieved the Bronze Certificate, but in the next week or so I'll hear back about my application for the Bronze Medal, which will then give me the Silver and Gold Certificate as well as the Bronze Medal)

Presidential Service Award (I haven't earned it yet, but I'll have the requisite number of hours this spring for the Bronze level)

World Affairs Youth Leadership program at Auburn University (Summer 2011)

I'm also a member of Mensa. These are all I can think of, but I think there are more. What are my honest chances at American? I want to study International Relations and Political Science. I'm also looking at Hofstra, Ithaca, UVA, Tufts, Yale and UPENN (As a reach obviously), Auburn, Hawaii Pacific, UVM, and a few others. I'd appreciate any advice there is!
