American vs Howard

These are really the two best options I have because I was waitlisted at my dream school UNC :(

American, the positives.
1. The School of International Service, or SIS, is amazing for IR, and since I think that's what I want to major in, SIS would be the best place for that!
2. It's in a beautiful part of DC and I love the campus.
3. They have amazing internships and great study abroad opportunities.

The negatives.
1. It's expensive, it would cost me about 30 grand a year. I have made an appeal and am hoping for more financial aid, but I won't find out for 2 more weeks.
2. If I end up changing my mind about majoring in IR, American wouldn't be worth the money for any other major and I'd probably have to transfer.

Howard, the positives.
1. It's in DC! I love DC :)
2. I got a scholarship that makes the school really affordable, costing about 12 grand a year.
3. I could be in the honors college! Which would look good on a resume.

The negatives.
1. It's not in a nice area in DC.
2. The admissions staff was so difficult to deal with -- I called 10+ times and they never picked up the phone!
3. It's an HBCU. It's not that I don't like black people, I'm half black, it's just that it's not diverse. I wouldn't want to go to a school that's 90% white either.

If anyone could give their opinion on what I should do, I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT! I've always looked at college as an investment in my future career but I'm stuck on which one that would be!!

“If I end up changing my mind about majoring in IR, American wouldn’t be worth the money”

Why would you say that ? Its a decent well rounded college.

American has average SAT of 1900, Howard has average SAT of 1560. 30k a year isn’t that bad for a private. State Universities cost 30k now. I recommend American for your major, for the environment you like and for better opportunities. Easy decision.

American. They are a pretty good school especially for what you want to major in. Why aren’t they worth the money for any other major, they have other majors they are strong in as well?

The reason I said another major at American isn’t worth 30 grand is because UNC would be cheaper and better. I know I got waitlisted at UNC, but they have a good transfer program and if I changed my mind about IR, UNC would come into the equation again. UNC just makes more sense at that point.

Living near DC, I’ve been on both campuses frequently, and they have two totally different feels. I think it’s more a matter of fit - you’ll have good opportunities at both schools. (although, I’m not sure how good Howard is for IR; that might be another deciding factor.)
