American

I know it's not a good idea to just look at numbers, but does anyone happen to know how many people American University auditions and how many they accept for their BA in straight theatre? Thanks

I would be interested in knowing that info too and what others have to say about American’s Theatre program. My S was just accepted into the program. He had some qualms about applying because American is essentially a “home town” school for him. However, he thoroughly enjoyed the audition experience, personally liked the auditors and was impressed by the school’s performing arts facilities, which are just 5 years old. The auditions were running behind and so he managed to meet several very nice kids who also were auditioning. The auditors told him that he would receive an analysis of his audition and, sure enough, a one page typewritten summary of the auditors’ comments on his monologues was included in the acceptance packet. This was very impressive because it requires extra effort on the auditors’ part to prepare such a detailed summary. The comments were very insightful and he found them to be very helpful. I am inclined to think that American does not audition as many kids as the more “famous” theatre programs - I think there was just one weekend for auditions and I don’t recall that they conducted any out-of-town auditions. However, DC is fast becoming a major theatre town and so there are opportunities for actors in the area and the opportunity to see many professional theatre productions. I don’t believe that any of the other DC universities have audition-based theatre programs.

But you don’t have to audition to be just a straight theatre major at AU, do you? It doesn’t appear that way on the site. It’s kind of confusing.

We are visiting the school on the spring-break college tour, and it’s very high on the list for my junior D, who wants to major in theatre but not be in a conservatory program. She’s going to sit in on a musical theatre class and interview with a professor in a few weeks.

There is a posting by an AU student on the Musical Theatre section under American University that describes the various theatre programs at AU. Apparently, the Theatre Arts program is a non-audition, non-performance based program. The Performance track is the audition-based program.
