OTTAWA (Reuters) - The number of U.S. citizens visiting Canada's main immigration Web site has shot up six-fold as Americans flirt with the idea of abandoning their homeland after President Bush (news - web sites)'s election win this week.

"When we looked at the first day after the election, Nov. 3, our Web site hit a new high, almost double the previous record high," immigration ministry spokeswoman Maria Iadinardi said on Friday.

On an average day some 20,000 people in the United States log onto the Web site, www.cic.gc.ca -- a figure which rocketed to 115,016 on Wednesday. The number of U.S. visits settled down to 65,803 on Thursday, still well above the norm.

Bush's victory sparked speculation that disconsolate Democrats and others might decide to start a new life in Canada, a land that tilts more to the left than the United States.

I hope they bring their own health insurance. I am the executive director and founder of an international non-profit organization for people affected by a cancer-related neurological disorder. The horror stories I hear from people in Canada about the waits for medical treatment and diagnosis are among the worst in the world. While the Canadian health care system is fine if you don't have a major illness, it's not a great place to be if you have any sort of major health issue.

Disgruntled Democrats looking to leave U.S. told to wait in line

"Canada has a message for angry Americans looking to leave the U.S. because of their disdain for President Bush's re-election: not so fast.

Officials say disgruntled Democrats would have to wait their turn and follow the proper immigration procedures, which often take up to a year to complete..."

Thats silly
If I was going to move, I would go to Costa Rica. HIgher literacy rate than US, lower cost of living and great weather!
It is not just a rumor that semesters in canada are winter 1 and winter 2!

We can wait. Signed, "Patient" (glad to see I'm not the only one!)

I spent some time in Vancouver last year and I loved it, it is drop-dead gorgeous. There was a palpable difference in the ease of travel, just a generally far more relaxed feeling about daily life there.

No, I'm not serious but still. I wonder if there was a comparable spike after other elections?

"NEW YORK - A 25-year-old man from Georgia who was apparently distraught over President Bush (news - web sites)'s re-election shot and killed himself at ground zero. Andrew Veal's body was found Saturday morning inside the off-limits site, said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. A shotgun was found nearby, but no suicide note was found, Coleman said..."

Oh man, I was predicting someone was going to kill him/herself (well, I thought Michael Moore would) but well, it really happened. Do I have a power of psychic? Ooh, I'm scared.

By the way, I think I'm staying here even though Bush won the election (well, I don't know what would my parents do though). Let's hope he learned something from his 1st term, and hopefully he'll do better in 2nd term.

I've been to Canada, and damn it if it isn't much nicer than here. I wouldn't mind living there. But I still prefer the idea of being an American.

Haha thats some funny stuff. Actually a girl who is in my brother's class told him her family is moving back to france by the end of the year because Bush was re-elected.

Anyone who feels that strongly about losing the election should move to another country. There are plenty of socialist countries where liberals will find themselves happy and well-taxed.

I hope they don't count my visit because I was just wondering how much it costs to immigrate. People that want to leave the good 'ole US of A because some leader that will step down in 4 years got elected should be encouraged to leave.
