recs are good. essays should be good (hopefully).

heres the thing: i have a ridiculous amount of b’s. this will undoubtedly hurt me. what can i do?

Well, I'm going to beat everyone to the punch and say "Amherst is at least a slight reach for everyone" and "elite schools are always an admissions crap shoot".

Moving on....

I think the fact that you have a lot of B's is countered somewhat by your high rank in your school. If its prestige is as high as you claim it to be, top 4% is impressive. If there is any reason in particular you have some of these B's, especially the junior year ones, feel free to add a short (read: short) note explaining yourself. Your speech ECs look good, but could be a downfall in that they're probably going to look for your essays to stand out. Maybe I'm being too nit-picky on that though.

Not that you can help it, but your race and gender are not strong draws for a diversity seeking school such as Amherst, but hey, we need SOME white people, right?

Overall, you look pretty strong. Emphasize your passion for speech-debate, and don't freak about the B's. For an 'elite' HS, Bs are ok sometimes. Especially in subjects you may struggle a bit in or aren't as decidated to. But again, everything is a crap shoot with schools like Amherst. Good luck.
