I got waitlisted. What was the rejection letter?

I got waitlisted too.

Rejected

[/list]Subjective[ul]
[]Essays: CA essay was about debates and how it has helped me in one aspect of my life (I’d rate it a 7.5/10 because the essay could have been better). Supplement essay was about my gap year (I’d give it a modest 7/10; the essay could have been much better)
[]Teacher Recs: 8/10s, I think. Nothing out of the blue.
[]Counselor Rec: Didn’t read.

[]Awards: No big awards.
[]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?:[/ul] I got rejected from 13 colleges I applied to. I now look back and I can’t do anything but feel bitterly disappointed about how high school turned out for me. I wasn’t a competitive applicant by any means, but straight rejections really shook my spirits. Anyway, good luck to all those who got in to their dream school(s).

Yeah, I’m definitely with you. I applied to 16 schools, and I got rejected from 11 and waitlisted from 2. The three schools I did get into were my very basic safety schools. I feel very bitter and disappointed.

Anyone know what the waitlist statistic is like for Amherst?

Roughly 13% last year.

I applied to 5, got rejected by two, into two, and waitlisted here. Luckily, I got in to my #1 pick! Yay for UChicago!

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): CR: 760 M: 720 W: 800 (over two sittings) Total: 2280
[] ACT: 33, didn’t submit (Don’t know why…)
[] SAT II: US History: 760 World History: 710

[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 6/609
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): World History (4), US History (5), English Language and Composition (5), Physics B (lol), Calculus BC (lol), Art History (4)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): Nopers
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP US Gov., AP Macroeconomics, AP English Literature and Composition, AP Statistics, AP Biology
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Ha!
[/li]

[] Volunteer/Community service: Did a bit with a religious group I was in. Also did some with a school group.
[] Summer Activities: Nopers
[] Essays:
-Common App: Talked about what I wanted to pursue in college. I really liked this one.
-Amherst: About how I wanted whatever future work I produce to go down in the cannon like my favorite writers. I really liked this one.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Both of them should be good. I was the only 5 the teacher had that year and the other one really likes me and I practically lived in his room my junior year.
[] Counselor Rec: I thought it would be bland and generic given that my counselor has >300 students to deal with but he says it was the best rec he’s ever written so…….
[] Additional Rec: Nopers
[li] Interview:
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): PA
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Large, urban, crappy public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: <100k
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I went to a very bad school so my grades were awesome and considering colleges like to say they look at you “within the context of your school”, I look pretty good. I might not have the scores that a lot of other kids do, but compared to everyone else in my school, I was at the top.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Bad school (?), Interesting Major choice (Philosophy? Probably not.) Nothing really. I’m terribly boring.
[] Weaknesses: SAT IIs, no awards, SAT isn’t above a 2300, lots of other stuff
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Average applicant with nothing special
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted EA to UChicago, Accepted to Williams College, rejected by Princeton, rejected by Brown
[/ul]

General Comments:

At this point, I’m just excited for UChicago. It is my first choice and I’m pumped. I denied the spot on the waitlist as soon as I got the decision.

Rejected

10char

Did either the acceptance or rejection letter share any admission statistics for this year?

rejected. ehh, you win some, you loose some. This and two others were my only rejects I’ve had a good run. Congrats to all those accepted! For me, I’ll be headed to Middlebury, Bowdoin, Cornell or WashU

Accepted (early write) and I just got my official letter of acceptance today. Parts of it seemed pretty specific to me; I wonder if the acceptance letters were NOT generic

Care to give an example?

I also want to see what a “harsh” rejection letter looks like.

By some miraculous way I was waitlisted.

Race: Black
Gender: Male

GPA: 3.1, Weighted- 3.5 (huge upward trend though)
SAT: 1680
ACT: 26

ECs: Won a couple of awards and I was officer of some clubs such as Muslim Student Alliance, Black Student Alliance and I was member of a few others.
Essays: They were good
Recommendations: I’m assuming they were also pretty good

Comments: Honestly, I am beyond shocked. I expected outright rejection and, I’m still confused as to why I got waitlisted. Even though I’m black my stats SUCK! Well the college admissions process can be very confusing at times. I’m very flattered that they saw me as a good candidate.

For those of you who have been waitlisted, you can find the statistics going back to 2003 on the college website, in the common data sets. Most colleges post this information. At Amherst, last year 80 got in off the list, but it was 29 in '11, 3 in '10, and zero in '09. It all depends on the yield. If Amherst really is your first choice, write and tell them that, there’s no downside. Good luck!

I also wonder what the rejection letter was like…and @hevydevy my letter mentioned my recommendations and essays as having impressed them but they might have said that about every accepted student.

I was waitlisted as well - got into Tufts though, so I’m happy  And above all, I’m incredibly relieved that all of this waiting for decisions is finally behind me!

Ah, the decline letter was not overly harsh, other than any Decline can hurt feelings, and I completely sympathize, trust me. Here is the Decline letter (including the stats for applications):

"After a thorough review of your application for admission to Amherst College, the Committee on Admission has decided, with regret, not to hold a place for you in the Class of 2017.

Nearly all the candidates whose applications we reviewed were academically qualified and had the enthusiastic support of their teachers and guidance counselors. Selecting among those applicants was a daunting task. Be assured, however, that each application was reviewed at length, that recommendations were scrutinized, that transcripts were interpreted with care, and that every case was reviewed more than once.

Our decision does not represent a judgment of your capacity to do successful work here, nor is it an estimate of the contribution you might have made to Amherst. Rather, that decision is a reflection of the fact that we had more than 7,900 applications from which to select a first-year class of 465 students.

I am confident that your interest in Amherst is a significant reflection of your high aspirations and that those aspirations will serve you well in your collegiate experience and beyond. I appreciate your interest in Amherst and wish you much deserved success in the future."

ED Accepted Students: Check your ACData page where it says “Admission Status Update” and then click on “View your letter here”. There is a new letter regarding photo ids and finishing out your last semester of high school! We’re getting closer!
