Amherst College Class of 2017 Official Thread

Hmm. Many athletes from our high school go to Amherst who would not have gotten in aside from their sport.

I was able to check my financial aid package for Amherst online! It was great!!

I agree with what magentaturtle asked was not polite… however, i have to disagree with you… the athletic hook plays a major role in getting in…
btw, congrats :)

^ It just gets old when somebody gets admitted that others don’t think that are up to par, the first thing they ALWAYS ask is are you a URM, followed by athlete, then legacy. I’m not saying that these things may be factors in the admissions process, but give the admissions folks a break. Considering the 4 year retention and graduation rate of Amherst, I’m pretty sure they know what they are doing.

BTW strawberry, what are you congratulating me on? I’m pretty sure I haven’t done anything noteworty lately. :)

@berries

How did you see your financial aid offer? I couldn’t find anything in the portal…

@ipodlover88909- I went to the financial aid site (Financial Aid | Offices & Departments | Amherst College) & then I clicked on the link under the heading Application Status and Award Notices, logged in, and then click on awards (near the top) and it was all there!

^ Thanks! I can’t see my award yet (because IDOC hates me), but hopefully it’ll be there soon…

@GM2012MOM. Oh I thought that u were the one that got an early write so nvm. Also, I’m just saying the being an athlete does help one getting in Amherst…

@berries123: I was able to get in, and it looks like all my forms are there! :smiley: I was worried they wouldn’t get through to IDOC or something.

I would have been lucky to get an early write from a CC back in the day, :wink: however my daughter graduated from Amherst and worked in admissions in different capacities during her years there. I think I was offended that magentaturtle either thought the applicant was either an athlete or a ■■■■■, and the way it was worded sounded as if there wasn’t much distinction between the two.

I agree that it was offensive but I didn’t let it get to me. I was actually amused at the accusation.

@CorpulentGowk
I believe that it was you whom i should say congrats to :slight_smile:
@GA2012MOM
although i believe that being an athlete helps one getting in, i also believe that being an athlete is not the only reason why amherst accepts him/her :D

WOOHOO got a letter today about Open House dates. Unfortunately, students who have been accepted ED aren’t funded for overnight stays. How many of you are going to an Open House? Which day?

Were any of you that were Early Writes initially deferred? n Does anyone know the total number of ED deferrals?

Congrats to all of you?

Is there anyone here who received an Early Write after the March 4th wave?

^Would not bet on it. I know you might be a bit anxious. However, after getting two early writes yesterday from Amherst-calibar SLACs, I can relax. The decision will come any day now.

Are early writes generally written in waves? I.e. if i didn’t get one yet, can I still get one before official release dates?

^ I don’t think that they are, but I could be wrong. Don’t be disappointed though: keep in mind that only a very small proportion of accepted students hear back before the official release date, so whether or not you get accepted early doesn’t necessarily predict your chances.

Also, has anyone else been able to view their award online? I logged into the finaid page but all I see are the “Home” and “Documents” tabs, as well as the basic information on the side. Am I looking in the wrong place?

My fadata page has Home, Awards, Documents, and Messages tabs. I think you are looking in the right place. I was accepted ED though, so your info might not be updated yet.

^Okay thanks!
To anyone else who was accepted: Just out of curiosity, how long after your acceptance could you view your package? I submitted IDOC a couple days before the deadline but they could only view it recently since it was mailed. So how long after all docs were sent can I expect to see it? I was so excited when I found out that I got in but I didn’t wanna be too happy considering it’s still over 60K a year :frowning: Hopefully when I can finally see my package I can be legitimately happy lol.
