Amherst College RD 2023

@wisteria100 - Thank you. Turns out that D2 got accepted to Wesleyan today. But what was unexpected was that the financial aide was tremendous - covering all but $3k of Tuition + R&B. D2 and parents are pretty happy right now. Amherst is a wonderful school. D1 has loved it and is finishing up her last year, getting ready to apply to med schools. In many ways it’s all for the best for D2 to find her own school and not be following in footsteps. I’ve been following the Amherst forum for five years, but it looks like good-bye for now.

@rmsdad Fabulous news!! Congrats. Wesleyan is indeed a fabulous place. My D is headed to Amherst. I hope she has as good of an experience as your D1.

@rmsdad Last year our girl was accepted to Amherst and Wesleyan and ultimately she chose Amherst, but Wesleyan gave it a run for the money. The alumni network is pretty incredible I hear. You should be a proud papa as you have obviously raised some amazing people. Congrats!

Anyone here attending the Amherst admitted student days?

To everyone wondering why the admissions process is so random, the process is highly subjective. About five years ago (I think), the Amherst admissions office let Bloomberg Business in to record some of their decision-making process. The head admissions officer at the time said that about 1/3 of applications make it to committee. At the end of discussion, admissions office raise their hands if they vote to admit. The Head of the Admissions Office at the time said “there are times where I don’t know why I raise my hand, and times where I don’t know why I fail to put my hand up, I’m kind of going with my gut here.”

@apmaster, you may call it random, but they seem to assemble a great class year after year. My kiddo was a voting member of admissions her senior year, and it’s not so random as you think. Those apps are scrutinized, but when it comes down to it, dont all decisions in our lives come down to a guy reaction?

@EganAg I’ll be going!

Congratulations to all of you! You have what it takes to be successful wherever you are admitted.

Those that were accepted, Amherst believes that you belong there. I was so impressed last year at move in weekend when the admissions officers said that every single kid was hand chosen and it was not an accident they were there. I believe that. As @CottonTales told me before my daughter attended, it really is a special place. Go see for yourselves

accepted as well!

Late to this conversation, but I was waitlisted. A little sad because I really liked Amherst, but I have some other great options as well so I’m not too discouraged. I had a 1550 SAT and 34 ACT, if that helps anyone

I want to know if students accepted from the waitlist is based the number of spots from their country and also if priority is given to those who accepted the waitlisted place first during the review of waitlist applications from applicants.

Hi everyone, I was accepted as a Schupf scholar (super grateful) and I was wondering if anyone knows how many people are selected to be Schupf Scholars just out of curiosity? Thanks!

I see 3 from 2011 mentioned, and one from 2010. After the internet outage at Amherst this spring it seems some files aren’t where they are supposed to be, on the site, so getting some Not Found errors.

@kwameaggrey Here is Common Data Set for 2018 that answers the question that it is not a ranked waiting list:
https://www.amherst.edu/amherst-story/facts/common_data_sets/2018

It says that 836 applicants accepted a spot on the wait list and as has been very well talked about 0 of those were admitted. We now know that they over enrolled last year.

Previous years waiting list numbers:

Accepted a spot on waiting list/Admitted from waiting list
2017: 590/60
2016: 582/3
2015: 643/33
2014: 600/61
2013: 659/49

Best wishes to you all that were wait listed.

Anyone who was accepted, does the acceptance letter say how many students they are planning to have in the incoming class? My son is part of the class of 2021 and his acceptance letter mentioned an incoming class of 472. Just wondering if they are still aiming for the same class size, or if it has been adjusted due to the class of 2022 being larger than normal. Thanks!

@Meddy - Did you and your daughter attend either the overnight open house or the day one? Also, would you be kind enough to share any favorite places to stay and eat near campus? D19 was fortunate to be accepted and is weighing options, but Amherst sits at the very top of the list!

@lucky18 D attended the overnight but without me. I don’t think either one is really designed for parents but maybe Meddy went?

I do Airbnb in Amherst every time. There are hotels but the only one that is walkable to campus is the Lord Jeff (soon to be renamed something else, I forget what). If you can afford that one it’s ideally located.

The Lord Jeff is now called the Inn on Boltwood. It’s a great hotel but I usually stay down down the road at either Courtyard or Holiday Inn Express where prices are lower. Both are about a 5 minute drive to campus and are nice.

@lucky18 No, I didn’t go. I would’ve liked to, but then thought better of it. We thought it would be more fun for her to go alone and she needed to get used to flying across country on her own. Plus we didn’t want to color her experience, which could’ve have influenced the outcome. Another thing was she made some friends sitting at the airports with fellow admits. That probably wouldn’t have happened had I gone. Oh. But.To. Be. A. Fly. On. The. Wall!

As far as where we have stayed, we used Amherst’s website here https://www.amherst.edu/visiting/lodging/bb
to stay in a couple of hotels and one B&B. All within a 10 minute drive. I think like @OHMomof2 I’d like to try an Airbnb next time as I have seen some within walking distance that look great. Btw, I laughed when on Move In Day we walked into the Lord Jeffs and they were already booked with 100+ on the wait list for the Class of 2022 graduation. It’s about as tough to get in there as it is to get admitted to Amherst! Congrats to your daughter! (& you!)

@Meddy - I booked our Airbnb for this May’s graduation almost a year ago!
