Amherst College Waitlist Thread 2021

Hey all,

Figured I’d start a thread for waitlisted applicants. Feel free to share stats, ask questions, air grievances, etc.

I’ll be the first! I got waitlisted (obviously), and this is my first waitlist:
GPA: 3.83 UW
SAT: 1510
SAT II: Bio 740, Chem 750, MathIIC 780
EC’s: Published research paper, Scholastics Writing Contest Silver Key Winner, Volunteer, Internships, etc
No hooks (Asian female from NY)

this was the first reach I heard bak from (I only heard from what my college counselor deemed possibles or likewise so far), so I had mixed feelings. Wasn’t too discouraged as I didn’t expect to get in after reading the CC thread/stats of Amherst accepted students (I opened an hour after results posted), but it made me a lil worried about ivy day. anyone agree?

@hungrihippo sameee. especially with less than a week to go! I want to hold out hold by reminding myself that the number of acceptances are so much smaller at LACs. But then again, there are so many more qualified applicants overall…

I’m thinking of sending a waitlist letter and an additional recommendation. Does anyone know who to address the letter to, and how to send in an additional rec (through email or through common app)?

DD was accepted off the waitlist today. Has four days to decide between Amherst and Rice! We’re flying up for a visit to Amherst this weekend.

@drgigantor Congrats! Be aware that next week is finals at Amherst. It probably will be very quiet, with people studying hard and a little stressed, same as they would be during finals week at any elite college.

Be sure to take that into account when you consider the campus atmosphere.

@drgigantor Should be a no-brainer – hope she enjoys the visit!

@drgigantor congratulations!

It will be quiet. D is done and ready to move out on Wednesday, this weekend is for studying :slight_smile:

If you have any questions there are a couple of parents around here, Thankyou and myself included.

Just got off the waitlist! Not sure if I’ll be able to visit and have to decide between Amherst and Notre Dame by Tuesday :confused:

Two very different schools–I was choosing between both many moons ago and chose Amherst. One of those fortuitous life decisions as I had an amazing 4 years at Amherst w/many lifelong friends from there to this day. My HS junior who had thought it too small for her recently spent a weekend there visiting a friend in one of the 1st yr dorms and loved it. What is your DD planning on studying?

@mammoth85 political science and economics

@grinnellephant01 Both are 2 of the stronger depts at Amherst. If $$$ costs are comparable or not an issue, I’d choose A (but I’m admittedly biased).

Amherst is a top ten school in terms of the percentage of its grads who go on to PhDs in both political science and economics. For its size, Amherst places its graduates into the top law and business schools at rates comparable to HYPSM. Amherst students are more likely to get Fulbrights, Rhodes scholarships, etc.

For example, right now there are 18 Amherst graduates at Yale Law School. There are 4 students from Notre Dame at Yale Law, even though Notre Dame is almost five times larger than Amherst in undergraduate enrollment.

@grinnellephant01 I was recruited to play a sport at Amherst (and other great D3 academic schools). After visiting, I chose ND and will not have the opportunity to play my sport at ND. 2 totally different places, both great schools, and you will have great opportunities at either. Only you know whats best for you, but you will be able to do whatever you want from either school, and if you do well go anywhere you want (even Yale law school)

@grinnellephant01 I’d highly recommend choosing the college you go to based on fit, not based on rankings. Go to where you feel you can fit in, have fun, and learn your best. Notre Dame is likely to open up just as many doors as Amherst. Good luck deciding!

Has anyone heard back after the first wave, or is the waitlist pretty much closed at this point?

@tofu123 I think it’s probably near closed :frowning: Williams hasn’t even gone to the waitlist this year

did anybody hear back? When is Amherst going to release decisions ugh
