I'm currently a sophomore at a ranked liberal arts college. I did horrible my freshman year as I had a heavy load of classes. I basically had a 2.75 GPA freshman year. Last semester, I got a 3.92 GPA and would like to transfer to Amherst college. My dad went there and he is very active with their alumni association. Although I did horribly my freshman year, I am turning things around. Do I have any shot in getting into Amherst College? Any suggestions/advice?

What college are you currently attend?
That’s actually plays a big role…

I attend University of Puget Sound. I attended though one of the best private high schools in the country. 12 out of my class of 95 in HS attend Stanford. I had a 3.2 in HS. Kids with 3.4-3.7 got into stanford. Highest GPA was 3.92 and the guy got into every Ivy, MIT, Stanford, etc.

first semester is probably not a big deal, as long as they weren’t all pottery classes. I took Calc 2, Phyics, Geology, Russian first semester (2 labs). I did crew 20+ hours a week, TA’d a class, and did research 5 hours a week. I ended up getting a C in Calc and a B in Physics, I dont consider these bad, just a bump on the road of adjustment (and not giving myself enough time to study). If you had a rigorous schedule and tough time adjusting, then I think you’ll be competitive.
