I just got an application in the mail, what is it exactly?

me too! I dunno what it is exactly
Are you going to apply, I am but I'm not sure which of the dates I'm going to apply for.

I'm applying for the Oct 21-33 session since Im seriously considering Amherst. But I don't know what to write for the short response since Im not sure what diversity weekend is.

it's a weekend where mostly minority students get to come to amherst for sat, sun, and mon of one weekend, see a bunch of presentations on how diverse and cool amherst is, and how they try and promote cultural, racial, class, etc diversity here on campus. I went in the fall of 2004, it was a really cool experience. Being here on saturday, you get to experience campus night life if you want, and monday you can take in some classes if you want. It's also rumored that if you are accepted into diversity weekend, you stand a fairly better than average chance of admission, but nothing too much more advantageous. And if you're in need of financial aid, they pay for you to come out here.

Overall, it's a pretty valuable experience, both for prospective applicants and just for seniors to see a campus for an entire weekend and take in college life. Hope you all come.

Sounds fun :). Thanks for the reply.

it's a great experience, not only to get to know amherst but to meet new people. many people you meet there will be cool and talented, and most of them get into not only amherst but mit, harvard, yale, stanford, etc. i definitely recommend it.

Is it competitive, or is it more of a first come, first served basis?
I wonder what I should write for the essay...

I believe it's slightly competitive, but nothing like the admin process. I know people have been denied in the past.

How do you apply to that?
Where do you pick up the application

I went to Amherst's DiVOH as well (and I'm asian - they definitely consider Asians a minority at Amherst) last year and had tons of fun. Amherst actually gave me a better financial aid package than where I ended up (Harvard) but it was only about $300 more in the grand scheme of things. It is really a lot of fun and you do meet so many cool people.

The campus is stupendous and they have a lot of fun events where we get to be admissions officers and decide on real (of course, from the past) cases. We also got to sit in on classes and you could really feel the intellectual energy from these classrooms, it was great. I actually sat in on a General Chemistry class and it was considered a "large class" - but there were only about 70 kids and the professor knew everyone's name.

The reason I chose Harvard over Amherst was definitely the social scene for me. Drinking everywhere, and for those of us who didn't drink, we were really stuck with nothing to do.

This is my personal experience... and by the way, Amherst stated in my letter that I had a 75% chance of being accepted. Not too bad for a weekend and having a top-rated LAC as a safety, basically.

xjayz what were your stats?

xjayz... thanks for that 75% number. I thought it was something like that but I didn't want to say it, have it be wrong and give everyone an inflated sense of hope here. If you get into DIVOH your admin chances do go up a lot. So yea, it's a great weekend for many reasons.

hm...my letter just says 75% of people who go to diverstiy weekend end up applying there...

xjayz, I am so sorry that you had the drinking-non-drinking experience that you had. D went to accepted student's diversity weekend a year ago, and she doesn't drink, but she was busy the whole time, and she matriculated, lived in the all female dorm that is also sub-free and always had something to do or somewhere to go. I think your experience was affected by the host you had.

heh... maybe it was 75% apply. who knows. what do numbers mean in admissions anyway. it's all a crap shoot

Yes, it is 75% who comes to the weekend that apply and out of those, 75% gets accepted. So, it is 75% acceptance rate.

I am not sure what would be the racial breakdown of that 75% acceptance rate. It is possible that for blacks and hispanics the acceptance rate maybe much higher, say 90% and for asians and whites, that rate may be much lower, say 50%. Still worth a shot.

I think thats fair, Hope. Regardless, 50% sure beats ~15-18%!

How does Amherst generate the list of people to invite? Are all of you rising seniors?

Is it bad if you order an app?
