Amherst DIVOH Questions

EiraRheon: Interesting. I was rejected from WOW and was accepted to DIVOH. My parents have never really heard of Amherst (poor immigrants) and they can’t look past the ivies. From the research I have done on Amherst, I can’t find a single negative about it. I really want to go and I really want to convince them.

I applied to WOW also, but I haven’t gotten a response. Does that mean my application was rejected, you think?

So if you didn’t get an email, you weren’t accepted? I wish they would have at least sent out a rejection :(

That’s strange. I got a rejection email from WOW. Both of you, don’t lose hope. You could still be accepted. Good luck :).

Look forward to meeting you KillForMIT  Can’t believe I’m going to Massachusetts hahah

just wondering how many of you guys actually received decision emails. i haven’t gotten any news so far…

For you WOW folks, the Priority deadline was July 14th. Many of us that applied by that date got our responses. (if not all) The regular deadline was yesterday. I’d give them a couple weeks.

Rickymtz: Awesome!! Are you going in October? I just have to convince my parents that Amherst is awesome. Have any suggestions?
Chinadoll: Hang in there. You should probably get an email sometime this week. Good Luck :).

IWillKillForMIT: My mom (who is really into HYPS) was quite swayed over by the fact that it’s absolutely FREE. You could potentially say that the visit would help you determine what type of college would suit you (which could possibly work to their advantage but probably not because LACs are quite excellent).

New poster, long time lurker. I read some of the other DIVOH threads, and wondered if they actually send out rejection letters/notifications? Some complained they didn’t get anything, and then didn’t post up the resolution. So does that mean that we mightbe in limbo for a really long time, possibly waiting for the letter that may not come?

…not to be a debbie downer or anything. I sent in my stuff on the deadline, so naturally I will be waiting a fair bit. Cheers guys, good luck!

Edit: Nvm, found in my spam box the rejection letter. Reads like this:

Dear_______,
Thank you for applying to attend an Amherst College Diversity Open House (DIVOH) Weekend. We received a record-breaking number of applications this year nearly hitting 1000! While your application made a great impression on the committee, we were unable to admit you to either program this fall. Unfortunately, the number of students that we can host on our small campus limits us.

Though we are not able to accommodate you during the DIVOH weekend, our decision is not indicative of your strength as a candidate for admission to Amherst College, and you should not be discouraged in your decision to apply for admission to Amherst. We are very excited about you as a candidate, and we look forward to receiving your application this fall. To underscore our appreciation, we have decided to waive the $60.00 application fee should you apply to Amherst this fall. In late October, we will send you instructions on how to access your fee waiver should you decided to apply to Amherst.

We understand that your being able to visit Amherst is an important factor in deciding whether or not it is the right place for you. Therefore, our office sponsors an Admitted Student Open House each April. Should you gain an offer of admission under our regular decision plan, you will certainly have a chance to attend this program, and we will offer to fund fully your travel to the College.

Thank you for taking the time to apply to our program. You are an exciting and energetic student with a strong high school record thus far. We recognize and appreciate your interested in Amherst and will be mindful of the fact that you have submitted a DIVOH application should you also decide to apply for admission to the College. We hope you have a wonderful senior year, and look forward to receiving your application this fall! Continue to work hard and be thoughtful about ways in which you can strengthen your college applications. Please feel free to email divtravel@amherst.edu or call the Office of Admission at 413-542-2328 with any questions you may have about Amherst or the general admission process.

Sincerely

Leykia D. Brill

Associate Dean of Admission & Coordinator of Diversity Outreach
Amherst College

Most probably a generic message, since my HS GPA and grades are rubbish relative to Amherst (3.3UW/4.3W) and is no way “a strong high school record thus far.” But yay, we all get to apply to Amherst for free because we wrote an extra essay during our summer (60 bucks goes a long way…)

In any case, good luck to those who may not have seen/received word of their outcome!

accepted!!! Is there a facebook group for this? and does anyone know about the program and how selective it is?

So, would going by airplane be faster than going by train? I want to miss as many days of school as possible, haha.

Not to bother but has anyone gotten any emails from Amherst, either acceptances or rejections? I haven’t received anything and I’m becoming paranoid that I didn’t send my application in properly, or they may have not read it all together because they ran out of room.

studen: People received notification as early as the 26th. You probably want to check your spam box.

So the reason I hadn’t received an email is because of a technical error. The final decision was that I was rejected. According the the Dean I talked to, my SAT math score was too low (which I was surprised, because my overall is 2210 on one try with a 800 in writing). They suggested I retake my SAT. They also explained that my math grade was too low as well. Knowing this information, I will probably not apply for admission because my grades/scores are too low. Have fun at DIVOH to all those who are going!

studen, my D was accepted to DIVOH (and WOW and some other fly-ins) with low math scores. She took the SAT and ACT once each and scores were: SAT 2230, 780/690/760 and ACT was 34 composite 36/28/35/36. (math was 28) so she seems like your profile exactly re: scores. Math grades are fine. She took pre-calc last year and got an A-, will take AP calc this year as a senior so she is a very average math student, but def not on par with most applicants to these selective schools. I’m sharing this so you won’t be discouraged! Scores are not the only thing schools are looking at. DIVOH accepted only 10-15%% of applicants this year, I heard, so I’m sure it was a very tough call. You certainly have plenty of time to retake the SAT to improve your math score. If you already have a 2210, with improved math you could end up with a great SAT, and if that’s the only weakness in your application…don’t give up!

I had a question about the traveling. If I take the airplane to Amherst, can I leave from any airport I want? And would everyone land at Hartford Conneticut, and someone from Amherst will transport all the airplane people to the campus from Hartford? I’m from Maryland, so what would be faster/easier-airplane or train?

aria123, once you register for the program they send you travel booking instructions.

To register for the program, you have to chose by “airplane” or by “train” and then they tell you travel booking instructions. However, I just wanted to know the logistics for airplane/train before I chose which one

aria123, I am from Northern Virginia, and made my travel reservations two days ago. I am flying from Dulles, but the travel agency gave me the choice between Reagan and Dulles. Also everyone arrives at Bradley and there is shuttle to take us to Amherst.
