@blindsided: Heading to the Chinese border? Nice! I want to major in Russian. It’s an odd passion of mine since 8th grade when I started to self-study the language. I stopped because I loved it so much that it was better if I saved it for college. Perhaps we might have some classes together :)

@blindsided and bosanskijezik: Russian is my first language…I figure if I get in, I definitely ought to take some Russian classes! I’d feel silly not taking advantage of Amherst’s awesome library hehe

@bosanskijezik Well to the north of pakistan you have the chinese and pakistan border, heres the tricky part its a treacherous mountain range and its freezing !! So being on a motorbike instead of a 4wheel drive is not recommended at all…but it was fun :D
I hope we do ! but first lets hope we get that admission plus i need work on a russian accent lol

@bluecannary; really ? naaaaiiceee…if we get in please teach me the right way to speak it !!!:D

@Ellie512: My pleasure! FINGERS CROSSED FOR EVERYBODY SERIOUSLY… sadjsadlksda

@Blindsided: Wow Russian lit? That sounds pretty cool… I didn’t know Amherst had such a selection! Thanks for sharing

Oh the chat was basically an Q & A session for prospective students! You really didn’t miss out on much unless you wanted to ask some more questions about admissions, social life, etc. The deans did give us some numbers-- a bit more applied this year (fewer than 500 still) and they accepted a little bit over a third of the freshmen class!

@LittleMissPink: Well I found out through the Virtual tour…it seemed fascinating !

a third of the freshman class has already been filled ?? that means the acceptance rate must have been really high this time around O____O

Apparently… ! Hm… I’m not getting my hopes too high about that because more people applied this time around Did anyone here write about Nike Air Forces (the shoe)? One of the deans said that was one essay that stood out and that person was accepted… Very unique

I’m so nervous.

NIKE AIR FORCES!!! I want read that essay lol

I have this tingling in my ear that I’ll get deffered…as a rule the tingling in my ear is always right :/

Wow, that’s pretty unique!

Hey guys, I just discovered this chat. It’s nice to have people to chat with who are going through the same anxiety that I am experiencing! I’m from India :)

@LittleMissPink : a little over a third of the freshman class ? That definitely implies the acceptance rate was higher this time around. But we can’t forget that around something like 400 got deferred or rejected, so I’m not pinning my hopes high at all. Thanks for informing ! That essay must’ve really been unique.

@Blindsided : I can relate…my dad wanted me to be a doctor, so I didn’t take biology in my A-Levels, and now he wants me to be an engineer, but I’m determined on a physics career.
You did some pretty amazing things. 10 A-Level subjects ??? That means you gave no less than 60 exams (6 papers per subject) …over here, 3 is the usual number, 4 is hard, 5 makes people go WOW, 6 is speechless …the highest I’ve heard here is 7 A-Level subjects, and that’s the record as far as I can tell…but 10 A-Level subjects ?? …I have nothing to say lol if you don’t get accepted, I doubt anyone with A-Levels will. So did you meet the Bangladeshis in a competition in India ? over here I know a lot of my friends who went to India for debates and biochemistry competitions…what’s ARSSDC by the way ? :)

I’ve heard that last year about 1705 international students applied, and about 103 of them got accepted. So keeping my hopes low, especially after knowing how stellar you guys seem to be.

@Webster0585 : Hi ! Yup, as you can see, things are getting pretty heated up with anxiety ^^

Hello everyone, I am from India. I’ll be applying RD so sorry to intrude in the ED thread, but I just had to. Y’all seem pretty interesting. Anyone else from this part of the world here?

@Fullmetal01: 21 subjects is the record… and that too from a guy here in pak …over here the norm is 5 to 6 subjects…Me and a friend of mine whose applying to Williams through ED, we both kept 10 Subjects, People thought we were crazy, difference is he will be giving his A-Levels this June and Ive already given them, and I got a 9A*s and 1A (stupid further mathematics -_- ) Ive done some reaaallyyyy crazy spontaneous things…half of which I very half heartedly put down on my application lol
It was a Culture Exchange among SAARC nations we all came to india for 2 weeks to just have fun and meet people, we went to Delhi,Jaipur and agra…amazing stuff. The funniest moment was me playing a war song in the background with this rajhistani violin I bought, while there was a great rift developing the afghan and Bengali folks. Later on I realized it might not have been a great idea but they loved it. hahaha
ARSSDC is the asian space development program which happens in India, the team who wins it goes to NASA to participate in the international space development program
Ive seen the most brilliant people get knocked out of amherst… u can NEVER tell whether your in or out so I guess the deal is to just take it in a stride :)

Wow the international students acceptance rate is wayyy lower :(

@Blindsinded - Even i participated in a cultural exchange with India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. It was pretty interesting!

I applied RD but my essay was about mac and cheese. I’m assuming I’m the only one haha.

Sent from my DROIDX using CC App

Any ideas which Essay is more important for ED, the common app or the supplement? Or do both hold equal importance? Just curious…

Question … Does wait listed = rejection, for all practical purposes?

Frankly, every counselor I’ve talked to has said once you meet the basic criteria for Amherst admission, admission becomes almost a lottery.

Though hopeful … I’m starting to prepare to be disappointed, and to move on.

From the discussion yesterday - Is Amherst finished with the early admit selections, and are just waiting until next Tues. to make announcements, or are they still reviewing applications?

@blindsided : I’ve got nothing to say about the 21 A-Level subjects record xD
But wow, you sure do seem to have fun, and I’m sure if your application speaks of that you have a very high chance of getting accepted.

@Webster0585 : yup …it’s too low for comfort …I think both essays are pretty important. The first essay might be for you to tell more about yourself and display your writing skills, while the second essay probably shows them how well you can debate on a topic, and is another chance for them to know you I guess. Can’t tell for sure

@amfreborg : well, they accept very few people out of the wait-list, so although it’s not a total rejection, it’s safer to assume that it is, so you can move onto other applications.
I just got an e-mail from Amherst, and it says this :

“Please note that the Amherst College Office of Admission will be posting your Early Decision application notification on your Amherst College ACData account late in the day on Tuesday, December 13.
Sincerely,
The Amherst College Office of Admission”

Thus, confirming what LittleMissPink told us.
So I’m guessing they’re probably done with ED selections, though they might have a few applications left to read and debate on.

I got the same mail from them some minutes ago…
Both my supplement and my common app were completely personal, they don’t offer interviews so I wanted to make sure I could tell them as much about myself as possible. In my supplement I elaborated on an anecdote that portrayed the quote, any arguments present in my essay were implicitly implied, not explicitly stated…I hope that doesn’t work against me!

Got the same email … Nothing to do now but wait. EXCRUCIATING!
