I’m trying to decide between physics and computer science as my future majors. I’ve heard that Amherst is good for physics, but not so much for comsci… does any one have any data or anecdotes about Amherst’s computer science department, or of the employment opportunities of its comsci majors?

Two of my friends were/are comp sci majors. One is now maintaining supercomputers at one of the Department of Energy’s [National Laboratories](United States national laboratories - Wikipedia), the other just sent in her applications to a bunch of the best comp sci Ph. D programs. I have a number of friends who are non-majors taking comp sci classes this semester, and they are all enjoying it. Not many people major in it, which can be an advantage re: getting to know your professors. One of my friends did a special topics class where the only other person in the class was the professor.

Physics is great here too, but I’ve said plenty about that elsewhere.

Do you have any information on which grad schools compsci majors have gotten admitted to in the past?
