Hello, CC!
I was admitted to Amherst College, Georgetown McDonough school of Business and Emory.
I'm from a low/middle class family and the costs matter quite a bit to me.
Their CoA are:
Amherst: $2k/yr
Gtown: $2k + $3k loan for a total of $5k/yr.
Emory: $6.5k. But they did not include personal expense in the budget, so it would come out to $8.5k+.

We can afford all three with little to no loan, but Emory is certainly the most expensive out of the three and I would probably graduate with a small loan/no loan at any of these three.

I was also accepted to Notre Dame, and I really like ND more than Gtown and Emory because of its community and balanced academics/social life, but their financial aid offer was not very generous, so I ruled it out.

Some of the things in consideration:
-Location. I'm from NYC, so none of them are really urban and densely populated in my book. Emory is the farthest. Amherst is suburban and has a nice college town shared with 4 other schools.
-I would major in economics at Amherst and business at the other two. Changing major at Georgetown would probably be much more difficult than at other two.
-I'm coming from a very large public HS, so I've never experienced anything like LAC education. But I like the idea of small classes and personal attention.
-I would have to apply to Emory's business school after 2 years.
-I'm visiting both Amherst and Gtown.

Amherst and Georgetown are different enough that you should come away with a fairly clear preference after your visit. Please share your impressions and decision with us.

Note that Amherst’s endowment is about 50% larger than Georgetown’s, even though Amherst is a much smaller school. See if any significant differences are apparent in the quality of dorms, dining halls, athletic facilities, libraries, etc.

Internship opportunities might be a factor in Georgetown’s favor.

My daughter got into Case Western, Miami (Fla), and Tulane with pretty good merit scholarships at all three (full ride at Tulane), and into Emory at full cost. She wants to study biology, and will certainly pursue a Phd down the road. What is the best bet for her?

^ The OP was admitted to Georgetown’s School of Business, not to Georgetown College (the undergraduate school of arts & sciences). Here’s a policy statement from Georgetown’s site:

The town of Amherst was too small for my D, even though we don’t live in a city nearly as large as NYC. If you will miss the city, I would think long and hard about Amherst.

The town of Georgetown, and the surrounding area, have much more to offer.

Also consider the cost of transportation to each of these colleges. It can add up fast.

I wanna rule out the accelerated masters programs as a factor. It’s not that important to me compared to other aspects of a school. I should be able to go to a good grad school if I work hard at either school.

@colodado, Please make another thread with more information. More people will be able to help you. But I just wanna say that you CERTAINLY do not know if your daughter will pursue a PhD. So many people go to college thinking they know what they wanna do, and I thought the same at first. But when I really asked myself, I didn’t know for sure. I have vague ideas at best.

Congratulations MCWING, you have some great choices. I would narrow it down to Georgetown or Amherst. I think a previous poster gave you good advice - these 2 schools are very different and a visit (or re-visit) should point you in the right direction. Coming from NYC you might find Amherst isolating. On the other hand it might be a welcome respite. But I also think you will find the general ethos of both schools very different. See how you respond on a very basic level to each school when you are visiting.
