Amherst or Bowdoin for gov majors?

Someone in the Amherst cc site asked the question about poly sci and government. He/she was asking about which school (Bowdoin or Amherst) had the stronger, more reputable program. I am also looking at lac out east and plan to major in gov/poly sci. I would like to hear what Bowdoin students or alums have to say about the gov program at their school. I am looking at either law school or working in politics after my four years of undergrad. Any thoughts? Thanks!

in 2004 or something the london school of economics rated the Bowdoin government program as the best in the world

Bowdoin...no other liberal arts college gov. department compares except for claremont...

Thank you for the information. It was helpful.

Hey nickoftime,
Bowdoin is AMAZING for government. LSE ranked them as number 1 college political science department in the world. The professors are smart and easily accessible and you can discuss research ideas and grants if you want and they make it happen. They bring in speakers and even authors of the books you study to inquire more or vent your frustration! Harvard and Columbia really respect Bowdoin and also it's government program that's why a good relationship exists between Bowdoin and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and Columbia Law School. It doesn't get much better than Bowdoin also in terms of getting government related internships in the US and abroad. The Department of State-Foreign Service came to campus four days ago to talk about internship opportunities in foreign countries at US embassies and help economic policy. Also when influential political speakers like diplomats, ambassadors and senators visit, professors(at least mine) make out a separate time for them to meet with the class and talk privately. Government is awesome here!

youngn-011...many thanks for the great info. I've read wonderful things about the gov program at Bowdoin. It is very reassuring having a current student reinforce everything I've read about Bowdoin's gov program. Bowdoin and Amherst are my two top schools. I visited both schools this past summer. Both schools, I feel, would be a great fit for me. Amherst may have a bit better name recognition, but Bowdoin seems to have the top gov program hands down. So, I really can't go wrong if I get accepted at either school. I really like the fact that Bowdoin's reputation in gov helps place students in some of the more prestigious grad schools. I do know that at either school, the student has to make the most of the opportunites offered. Thanks again!
