Amherst-Questions

Couldn’t attend the Open House - had some questions for existing students/students that went to Open House. I am using my daughter’s CC:

1) Can you have a double major? Are there minors at Amherst?

2) Study abroad- anyone have good information from current students. Did they have any issues with studying abroad and using their fin aid to do study abroad?

3) Any existing students have info for possible 3/2 program with other schools to get engineering degree?

Thanks

You can double major (or even triple major) at Amherst. The open curriculum makes that a very feasible – and popular – option for students. There are no minors.

Students can also create their own interdisciplinary major wherein they combine up to three areas of study. (For example, a very poplar one recently has been international development: a combination of political science, anthropology, and economics.)

See my response in the other thread particularly about Study Abroad.

Any other responses? 3/2 engineering?

Dartmouth has an engineering program that can be 3/2 or 2/1/1/1… I don’t think anyone from Amherst has ever done it, although you theoretically could through the 12 college exchange. If you are seriously intent on an engineering degree though, I think it would make more sense to just go to a school that offers one…

Engineering is narrow and pre-professional. One doesn’t apply/come to Amherst expecting to study engineering. MIT and Stanford are the clear choices.

Yes, I am not 100% engineering, but it would be good to have the option. How does the 2/1/1/1 option work?

Smith has an excellent 3/2 engineering program.

Their 3/2 program---- with Amherst? Do you know if there is info on their site? WIll take a look.
