Amherst regular decision thread

hahaha XD Good luck to you all, really!
You won’t believe- I’m literally checking my mail every day and have become a CC addict!

LOL, never mind that. What are your intended majors?
Mine’s Economics, but I’m hoping I can mix it up with a minor in Psychology, Sociology or Math or something. Don’t feel economics by itself is strong enough for my career choice.

I’d call my SATs also sub for the schools I’m applying, though I’m an international and I hope they take that into consideration (how many applicants from the Czech Republic do they have, right? =)). My superscore is 1980, too. But I’ve seen so many students with 2400 SATs and 4.0 GPA rejected in the Stanford Uni threads that I’m not worrying about my SATs much anymore.

But I’m wondering whether they have already sent some eof the early letters because I’m pretty sure if somebody got one they would sure share their news on CC.

I’m also kinda CC addict but it’s so nice to know that I’m not the only one counting down every single minute til the decisions come out.

What quotation did you respond to in the supplement? I did number 5 - “Difficulty need not foreshadow despair or defeat. Rather achievement can be all the more satisfying because of obstacles surmounted.” and wrote about my exchange year abroad.

my SAT scores are not as high as many either. I only took it twice cuz i dont like standardized tests AT ALL. i got a 570 for my math then retook it and got a 680, with a 1930 total lol i didnt feel like studying more for a 2100+. Amherst is one of of my top choices though. I just love the small size even though many people want to go to college for the larger community, but i prefer personalized attention.

Hopefully my other stats will make up for my slightly dismal SAT scores otherwise I’ll forever be kicking myself for not taking it a third time lol…

I sent them an application update like a week ago to tell them that I’d be the first African/African American valedictorian (i was born in Zambia) to graduate from my high school just to make my app a bit stronger and the office was super nice which made me love Amherst even more. i want to go soooooooooooooooo bad!!!
The supplement was just soooo short though! compared to other schools. thats one thing that i noticed, so hopefully my essay was good lol.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU!!!

It’s good to know other people applied with scores like mine. I responded to quote #5 as well, I wrote about the first time I made mac and cheese haha. I know it sounds stupid, but there’s no way it won’t get noticed by admissions (hopefully in a positive way though haha).

I got an early write today. I wasn’t expecting one… So exciting :)

Brief Stats:

2300 SAT
4.0 GPA
1/346
African American Female from TX

(more details on stats can be found in my “chance” threads)

I got a letter today and got in!! Woohoo!!

@rpraderio: That’s cool, I like your idea! =)

Good luck to all of you, guys. The decisions are only 4 weeks away and I wish we’ll meet here with our positive results…

In the meantime, where are you from and what are your passions?

I’m from Prague in the Czech Republic; I studied music for 8 years in high school (clarinet and piano), I love theatre and I volunteer in AFS Intercultural Programs since I’ve come back from my year program in New Zealand. And in the last several months I teach English and recorder in kindergarten schools which is kinda connected to my dream major - psychology. Btw. I’ve already graduated from high school last year.

Just wondering - was the early write via snail mail or email?

PS glad to see there is some action finally on this thread :)

To seasmart,
Congratulations to you! Any additional details you could provide would be appreciated by others on the forum (details of letter, statistics, etc.)

regards,

the letter came through snail mail

Ahh the mailmen stalking commences.

Any other theatre majors out there? I hope not, I was relying on being a male performing art applicant to be my diversity point haha! Seriously though, anyone else interested in music, theatre, or writing?

Sent from my DROIDX using CC

@Sprinter
Could you tell us when the letter is dated?

Congrats to all those who got their early writes! I envy you will all my heart :P, and wish you all the best!

As for us less fortunate souls- mailmen stalking begins indeed! XD

That’s just the best thing about LACs, btw, having such an intellectually ‘diverse’ community of people with different interests XD

I’m an international (Asian, though I really hate the ‘label’ attached to it) living in the UAE.

I responded to the quote from “Jaggu”, the physics professor at Amherst. 'Rigorous reasoning is crucial in mathematics…"…

I tried to put sarcasm into it but it, sort of, must have backfired as it sounded a bit incoherent as I read it after submitting… Whatever…

True, I have never been so snail mail obsessed. =)

@Cantabrigia

the letter was dated March 2nd, 2012

Well if it’s dated March 2nd I still have a chance. Although I do not consider myself among the strongest applicants I can dream the next few nights about getting an early write =) because it would get here on Friday 9th the earliest, I’m guessing - maybe even next week. Oh my gosh, I so hope to discover one in the mailbox. Wish me luck, guys!

Mine was dated March 2nd, 2012 as well. Usually it takes 3 days for a letter to be sent across the country, but I live only a state away so it might take longer if you live far away. Don’t give up hope!!

@seasmart: I live in Europe so pretty much far away. =) And it usually takes at least a week for snail mail to get here from overseas.

Btw. Congrats to you who received the letter already!
