I’m doing the science essay about how much i love snow. Is this too random or off topic…I love Amherst and really want to be accepted. I know this is a really general question and any feedback would be great!

A friend of mine here wrote about how he loves Mountain Dew. If you can write a good essay about a seemingly mundane topic, more power to you.

The most important thing is that the essay is well written. No one cares if it is too random, but make sure that you put something in that pertains to the question.

I'd have to disagree in that the most importance part of the supplemental essay is that it's well written. What Amherst is looking for here is insight into you as a student and person. Think about your topic and ask yourself, "does this tell something about me that Amherst can't see while reviewing my application?" Amherst doesn't give interviews, so this essay is the perfect way to explain who you are. If you have a lot to say about snow and it's insightful, interesting and true to yourself--go for it.

Thanks for the comments... I wanted to use the beauty of snow from a chemical standpoint to show the beauty of science (the prompt). I also tried to be a bit humorous about the downsides of snow. In my Common App. essay, I tried to address somehting more personal. I'm worried that my supplement essay isn't "insightful" enough...

I agree with Alisonfay. Make sure that it tells something about who you are.

I think that this sounds great, remember they are reading 1000's of essays and are normal people who want to read something amusing, interesting, readable, etc. BTW, I got into amherst ed and my supplemental essay did not say anything personal about me.

Thanks everyone... I appreciate your comments. And hopefully I'll see you on campus next year hpg90!
