Does anyone know anything about men’s tennis? I see the roster is pretty large, how many are recruits and how many are walk-ons? If you are a good HS player without USTA ranking, can you play? Do any of the team members also play other varsity sports? Think that would be possible? Thanks!

send an email to Coach Chris Gardner. He is pretty good about responding

If anybody knows anything about intramural or club tennis, I'd love to hear about that as well :)

i talked to the coach about playing- he prob wont give you a scholarship or help your application since he can only give aid to 2 or 3 kids and you dont have a ranking (thats how i am too). he told me if i were accepted to amherst, i would always be able to play for the team bc i think everyone makes it.

In an effort of full disclosure.. Amherst does not give athletic aid/scholarship. No DIII school does. It MIGHT try to circumvent this by being more generous with financial aid or offer more grants/scholarship than loans, but none of these things are tied to athletic prowess but more to financial need.

i mean they can only support a few talented players- whether that be in extra aid or backing their applications

If I go to Amherst, I plan to trying to walk on to the team. But I won't be getting any recruiting attention because our high school coach is a moron and knows nothing about any of that. We have a kid who's ranked top ten in the region on the team (he is our #1 singles player--two spots ahead of me on the squad) and he got barely any attention from any colleges because our coach has no idea what he's doing when it comes to getting the word out.

It isn't the coaches responsibility to "get the word out". It's the players responsibility to contact college coaches and be their own advocate. College coaches may contact your high school coach if the player has already made contact with the college coach.
