Amherst vs Williams

I'm making a list for my reach colleges and am not sure which college I should apply to for ED. I'm going for premed. Amherst or Williams?
The other colleges on my list are

Kenyon
Franklin and Marshall
Hamilton
Juniata
Bates

Are these school choices good for premed? And which other colleges are good for international premeds which preferably give aid?

First, please clarify what you mean by aid. Do you qualify for need based aid or are you counting on merit aid? How you answer this will make a huge difference in your list.

Second, not all internationals are created equal. Many LACs use internationals to beef up their diversity percentages, but that only works if you are “diverse.” I note from your other posts that you are Canadian, so you may not get the same international advantage that you would if you were from a developing country.

Third, are you aware that pre-med isn’t a major per se? As long as you fulfill the course requirements, you can get into medical school in the US with just about any major. Between Williams and Amherst I’d give Williams the edge on sciences, but for sure Amherst grads get into top med schools too.

Fourth, I know you can only apply to one school ED, but since both Williams and Amherst are highly selective why not apply to both? Also, if you must have financial aid, ED is risky as you won’t be able to compare and negotiate packages.

@momrath By aid I mean’t need based aid like Amherst which assures you the rest of the money if you get in. All the schools I have on the list are the same (atleast that’s what I learned form their site). If otherwise please tell me.
By international I meant India but I’m also looking at colleges in Canada hence the other post since I guess it is easier for an international student to get into a Canadian Med School rather than a US med school.
I’m looking at the Sciences which gives Williams the preference but isn’t the premed advisory an important factor in undergrad decision making?
For the ED part, how about EA for both colleges? Will that still give me a better chance of getting into college rather than regular decision?

@kwu that helps but it still begs the question about which school is better for premed?

My son was in humanities not science, so I only have indirect information but my understanding is that Williams’ medical school counseling and ultimate admissions track record is excellent. Anecdotally, I can tell you that friends of my son did well in medical school admission.

Neither college offers EA, so it’s ED or regular. At Williams ED is a big advantage.

Neither college offers merit aid. If you qualify for need based aid, both are generous. If you are admitted they will help you with financing but only if you qualify for need based aid. Ask your parents to use an on-line calculator to determine how much you may be eligible for.

I’m a bit unclear on what “if you can get in, you can afford to go” really means. I may be wrong but I believe that all aid, even “full need” is still based on formulaic need. I.e., what they calculate that you need. This usually works out well for low income families, but results are variable for the middleclass.

My guess is that Williams, because of its rural location, gets fewer South Asian applicants than Amherst. However, this is just speculation as schools don’t breakdown the ethnicity of their applicants.
