What does the Amnesty International Club at your high school do? (If you have one). Thinking of starting one more to discuss certain things with likeminded peers, but I need some ideas for activities. Thanks in advance.

Mine...eh. Wrong people involved. It would be great if it got a fresh start.

If I were to start an Amnesty International Club at my school, I would work on raising awareness about human rights campaigns (posters, guest speakers) and organize workshops for writing letters to prisoners of conscience and world leaders. I'm a cardholder of AI, but I didn't bother creating a club at my school. I just do stuff on my own and work with the local chapter.

uhh it's pretty much dead in my school..
I was in it last year but it was so.. blah
I wrote a letter to this woman somewhere in russia because i think last year's theme (or the year before) was something about women in crisis?
It was all just blah
And there was this thing about signing a petition about something..

ours is semi-dead. it might be dead next year because well, all of us are seniors (we all joined in grade 10). all we do is sign petitions and sending them to government officials. i love the cause but it's pretty boring just doing those stuff.

i'll try and see if i could encourage them to do other stuff.

We hold a Hunger Banquet in the winter each year. It's an event held in the evening (three hours or so) and everyone is invited. In the past two years, we've had adult representatives from local AI chapters come and speak to us, a woman who fled persecution in South America, a slideshow summarizing events in Darfur, a sing-along version of John Lennon's song "Imagine", an Indian cultural dance, a video we got from AI about homelessless and its effects in a South American country... Plus we ask local restaurants to donate food. We've had pizza places, Chinese and Indian restuarants, Dunkin Donuts, sub sandwiches, etc, plus our own home-cooked pasta and brownies :P. Oh, and we charge money to get in (a few dollars), all of which goes to a different organization each year. Last year we donated to Oxfam. We also asked for individual donations, and we even had a guy give us a $100 bill! It was insane. And we had like ten petitions that people could sign. Plus we had a table with like that big art paper and people could post their handprint (using ink or something) on the paper and sign their name, part of the Stop Violence Against Women campaign.

On a weekly basis, our President - who is amazingly passionate and informative - shares information with us (and sometimes we bring in articles or details ourselves). We write letters and holiday cards, make signs to hang around the school, etc.

I <3 my Amnesty club.
