How many SATIIs would a typical applicant need if he was applying to colleges in the Ivy League and other similar colleges? Would it be two or three? And if a college just required two would taking more be beneficial?

Most competitive school require two but there are some like Harvard that require three to be eligible for application.

Do you have any particular schools in mind? You can look them up

Three should suffice. There’s no need to take more than three if you do good on all of them.

Well for me I’ve already taken Math 2 and Chem with mid-high 700s on each, and I’m wondering about whether or not to take Physics in June or take the SAT I in June. I’m currently enrolled in an AP Physics class but am doing terribly and do not like physics at all so I’m not really in the mood to study for it.

If you’re going to engineering in college, then by all means take another science subject test. If not, you could try filling your third spot with a language or humanities test, to show diversity of knowledge. If you’ve taken AP US History this year, the SAT II in US History will be easy–it’s basically a longer version of the multiple choice section on the AP exam.

Here’s your answer as to how many the different colleges and universities require: [Compass: Admissions Requirements](<a href=“SAT Subject Test Requirements and Recommendations”>SAT Subject Test Requirements and Recommendations)

I think Brandeis eliminated the requirement this year and the UC system is scheduled to eliminate them in 2010.

Thanks for the responses. So for the colleges that only require or recommend two subject tests, would taking a third one that I can perform well in boast my application?

And if I plan to major in business, would I need to take a humanities related subject test in addition to my science and math one? Because I’m not taking any humanities courses this year which have subject tests but I am in AP Lang this year and intend to take AP Lit. next year. However I did pretty poorly in the SAT CR (680) so I don’t know how well I can do in the Lit Subject test. Any guidance?

You can just take the ACT and not take any Subject tests, that worked out for me.

Take three, and don’t feel like you have to take the third in science or math. I took Math 2, Chem, and US History, and that sufficed for engineering at top schools.

Although you may not think that you will apply to a school that requires 3, take the third anyways, as you never know which schools you will end up applying to half a year from now.

I’m trying to think of a school that has an undergraduate business major and requires three SAT IIs…

The only people who benefit from taking more than three–assuming good scores–are homeschoolers.

Ok so basically I do not need three subject tests for any college that does not require three because it will not benefit my app?

And that if I do need or want to take a third test, it does not matter whether or not it has to be humanities related to show diversity–all I have to do is be able to score well on it?
