What is a good amount of schools to apply to? A lot of people on here apply to 10-15 schools, which looks like a lot. I don't even think I could visit all of those schools, or write essays for all of them. I guess that's where the common app comes in.

Right now I only have about 6 schools I'm interested in, with 2 reaches, 2/3 matches and 1/2 safeties.

Northwestern - Reach
UMichigan - Reach
Ullinois Urbana-Champaign - Match (in state)
UWisconsin Madison - Match
Purdue - Match/Safety
IIT - Safety

As you can see, only about 2 of these schools would be considered prestigious by CC standards. But my credentials well exceed the requirements for my matches/safeties, and I'm pretty confident I can get in. Plus I'm in-state for Illinois (which is 90% in-staters) and many of my matches have very high acceptance rates. Do you think I need any more schools than this?

I think 6-8 is a perfect number and I think you may want to add one more just to be safe. It could be another match, reach, or safety school. I think when people have 10-15 schools it means that they are not very sure about what school they want to attend. I would personally apply to that much, but to see how much fin. aid I get from each school and to keep my options wide. I def. agree that if you apply to 15 schools, you may know a lot about A school but not about F school. My input.

I applied to six as well. It’s a good number. IMO applying to 10-15 schools is outrageous. Too much unnecessary stress. I agree with tawo though. If you have the time and have credentials that truly exceed your matches/safeties, another reach wouldn’t hurt. good luck.

I actually only want to go to Ullinois. Cheap (ha!) in-state tuition, not too far from home, and a stellar Engineering program. But applying to only one school would be suicide. Michigan is nice too, but it’s expensive and pretty tough to get into. Purdue is nice too.

Maybe I’ll do some more research and add another match or something.
