Amount of work; grading; weekends

How would people characterize the amount of work for science majors at UR? How tough is the grading? What do students generally do on weekends?

JustBob, to see what students generally do on weekends, go to my post under the thread, “Why do you like UR?”.

That was just my experience, depending on which of the 230+ clubs you join on campus (https://sa.rochester.edu/ccc/</a>) your weekend can be totally different, and definitely exciting.

I graduated from the U of R in May '09, and I was a science major. Extracurriculars were always a huge part of my life, so I always devoted time to them. Regardless of how much work you have, you can always find time to do what you love at the University of Rochester. This seems to coincide with the curriculum, where YOU choose only the courses YOU want to take! (only 1 required freshman writing course).

I think the amount of work is standard to any good university. You definitely won’t be doing any more or less here compared to other top 100 schools in the nation.

The grading is very fair, and you always have an opportunity to look back over your science homework and tests to fight for more points.

By talking to upperclassmen, you can find out if there are particular professors you should avoid, and you can find professors that are absolutely amazing. Here’s a start - Thomas Krugh in Intro Freshman Chemistry is one of our best professors. Prof. Kellogg in Neuroscience is one to watch out for, (difficult). By asking upperclassmen about their professor recommendations, you can have excellent professors your whole time here! All professors here love what they teach, and they teach with a passion to the students. They are very interactive and personable. This is because they know students have elected to take their course, therefore the students enjoy the material.

Your classmates will be very intelligent at the U of R, so you just have to balance work and play to succeed. 2 hours of uninterrupted work a day will keep you on top. This leaves you with A LOT OF FREE time! Bump that up slightly higher if you have a few exams / papers due in a week. If you’re taking a course / courses with a lab associated with it, block off a full saturday/sunday afternoon to complete the write up for it. Again, you still have lots of time to have fun.

The University of Rochester is rigorous, yet manageable. That’s why students come out of here with a great degree, and you’ll have tons of fun while you’re here!
