An african - "MY" chances. Plz i need advice

Hi! My name is Maduka. I am a Nigerian. Nigeria is a country in West Afriica

I jus graduated from Secondary School(high school) yesterday and I definitely am going to take a gap year and at the same time, apply to colleges. I need to know the chances of a person lyk me to be admitted to an Ivy league school.

Stats

I haven't done my SAT 1 & 2 yet but i hope i get really high scores.

So what i want to know is what else i have to do to get admitted to an Ivy league School and what scores in my S.A.Ts i need to get?

Here is the 25th -75th percentile SAT scores of the Ivies (last year's data). Source -US News 2006 edition.

Harvard 1400-1580

Yale 1400-1560

Princeton 1360-1560

Dartmouth 1360-1550

Columbia 1330-1540

Brown 1320 -1520

UPenn 1330-1500

Cornell 1270-1480

Interpretation: Harvard's 25th percentile score indicates that 25% of the students have SAT score less than 1400 and the 75th percentile indicates that 25% of the students have SAt scores higher than 1580 in that particular class (class of 2009).

Hope this helps. You should aim for a score (math +critical reading for the new SAT) that at least falls within the median range. Depends on which Ivy you are aiming for really. For example, for Harvard you would require a much, much higher SAT score than for Cornell.

WOW! thanks a lot for the info. That has really helped. So which skulz out of those mentioned above are good engineering(electrical or computer) schools? And if i get the required SAT score, do i then have a very high chance of getting admitted.

Also, which one of these Ivies give the most financial aid.?

Thanks a lot for the info and it will be appreciated if i can get more.

Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown follows the liberal arts curriculum. never heard of an engineer who went to those places...don't even know if they have engineering (Dartmouth has a graduate engineering school).

Cornell, UPenn, Columbia have engineering schools.

Harvard, Yale Princeton are the 3 richest schools and are therefore need blind in finaid even to internationals. That means applying for aid won't hurt your chances of admission. You just have to worry about getting in. Dartmouth is not need blind but is excellent with aid. Brown,UPenn and Columbia are stingy but i think they will meet your full need if u get accepted (but getting accepted with aid can prove to be a hassle). Cornell is the worst with aid..no guarantee to meet need...they might take you and ask you to pay full. Also, even if you get aid there a very high percentage of the aid is loan.

hope this helps. best of luck!!

thanks a whole lot. This is really helping.... In other words i should think about applying to Princeton, UPenn and Columbia if i want to get a reasonable deal.

Apart from Ivies, are there any other very good schools in Engineering, If so, which is?

What about Stanford? Are they need-blind to internationals too?

Stanford is far from need blind. It's actually very stingy with international aid.

Try MIT ..it's possibly the best place for engineering in US.

noxious nirvana the median scores apply to Intls or they are higher?

HI maduka. I am also from Nigeria, and I recently got accepted to an Ivy League school. I would be glad to give some adivce on my experience.

Well what secondary school did you graduate from?(just curious how come they use GPA)

Well most schools advertise that they are need-blind but not in the case of international students. Stanford isnt but the other schools I would list below are.

Well Stanford as they said isnt need blind they are mad stingy(I was rejected)

MIT in ma books is the best engineering school(i was rejected though, but Im fine) is very liberal with financial aid (i have a friend from Nigeria with similar stats who got his full tuition covered)

I applied to Princeton(i was waitlisted, but I know they have an awesome science/engineering field and they have awesome financial aid)

I was accepted at Columbia(good science/engineering and they are quite liberal with financial aid-at least in m experince they gave me over $30000)

I was also accepted at Cornell and they have an aweseom science/engineering programs and they are not as libereal with financial aid but they are quite generous

Well try your best on you Sat(take note the scores from below are on the 1600 scale). But work real hard on your essay cos that can make or break you

I wish you all the best.

There is a Nigerian thread( http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=152521 )here if you are intrested in talking to other Nigerians who just took a gap year and how it worked for them

DhanPrad:

The scores are the median distribution for the whole student student body(including ints) i think. Ints may have a different median range of course but shouldn't be too different from the one provided. Some ints like to believe that they need higher scores than americans...but i really don't think it is the case in the top need blind Ivies. In fact, if i remember correctly, the acceptance rate of internationals is a bit higher than the domestic acceptance rate in Harvard.

coz it drives me crazy when seniors & teachers tell me you have to be thrice as wonderful as local students(american) to get into top LACS

ahh..well....always better if u ask a senior or teacher who actually got into a top 3 LAC or a top Ivy for advice.

Hi Maddy! Like you, I'm a Nigerian (guess my location gave me away). I also took a gap year but I'm at the tail end right now. I'm not going to an ivy but I won't mind giving you whatever advice I can. When are you taking the SAT and what school did you go to?

You should also know that we have a Nigerian thread. Follow Afrik's link.

thanks a whole lot for all this. I am really getting a lot of info from you guys.

To "Afrikaan" - I passed out from Dowen College, Lagos. Its in lekki if you can recall. And in Dowen, the transcripts issued has the g.p.a of all 6 years of study. I calculated the average G.P.A from the 6 which i suspect the Colleges are going to do.

In other words I should redirect my choice from stanford. Because apparently they are very stingy. Although i would really love to go there....(in silicon valley).

Anyways, i didn't know there was a Nigerian thread. I'll check it out in a minute.

Thanks everyone for your contributions. Nice to know that people care over here. I am still open to more suggestions and information.

oh yeah, to "switch", i am taking my SAT 1 in October and SAT 2 in december.
