Ha, I moved from China to North America like five years ago and I was immediately drawn to the good old rock n roll. I've been playing guitar now for about two years and I plan to send a cd with my (crappy) recordings to the university I apply to. I haven't won any awards but I do play in school coffee house. Do you think i should emphasize it as my main extracirricular activity on the application? I wonder how many people here plays rock instruments and plan to send the tape to the colleges?

p.s. I am play mostly blues and rock (not jazz) does it matter?

but i dont think it would matter to your college significantly unless you won some kind of award or something. cus there are many really really good guitar players throughout the country, you know? so go ahead and try out in some kind of contest! if you win something, college out count that positively.

but remember, even if you do that, colleges wouldnt count that as significant as you think they would. to them, it would be just one of the special extracurricular activities you had. (because Many, MANY of my friends are crazy at instruments and won MANY awards. and you know, all these college things are competitions.) yea.. so keep up your grade, SAT score and win something with your nice guitar skill :D it would definitely help you that way!
