Just wanting to get a basic idea on what I need to have before school starts. thanks

Things to write on, things to write with, things to hold paper, a calendar, and a backpack/bag of some type...so essentially some notebooks and folders/binders and pens/pencils are about it. You don't really need as much as you did in high school because professors usually don't care what supplies you use

are you talking like school supplies? (as in paper, etc) It's not much different from high school. A few notebooks/folders/binders, whatever you prefer to use, don't buy but just a couple pens because you get free pens EVERYWHERE on campus. Um, highlighters, a bookbag if you need a new one, a day planner, um... that's about it.

a day planner is key to stay organized. also don't forget the dorm basics: bedding, personal hygiene and shower stuff (including flip-flops), a whiteboard, etc.

definitely bring a laptop -- it may end up being a distraction in class, but you'll be very happy you have one i think...can't wait to get mine haha

Notebooks for each class, folders/binders, loose leaf paper, printer paper, pens/pencils, and a calculator for math and science classes.

If I'm moving across the country for college, do you think I should purchase supplies there or bring them along with me?

Additional question: what size binders would you guys recommend? In high school I could rarely get away with 1", but I'm thinking in college most notes will be taken on laptops so there will be less paper.

...or am I totally off-base?

I don't use binders, I use spiral notebooks to take notes.

I've never used my laptop to take notes. I've seen very few people use their laptops to take notes.

Purchase supplies there so you won't have to travel with them on the way.

yeah..you probably don't need binders..i don't think i've ever actually seen anyone use a binder haha

here's what i do:
say i have three classes MWF and two TR. i buy a 3-subject spiral notebook to carry with me MWF and a 2-subject for TR. i take notes on the lined pages and keep loose papers & handouts in the pockets of the notebooks. this approach keeps everything streamlined and i'm less likely to forget something :)
