Hi, I'm a friend of astronautical. I had a question about teacher recs that, in my opinion, was bothering me, but I would feel stupid asking my GC. I was wondering, when you ask a teacher to write a rec for you, do they write only one rec, one for each school you're applying to, or one overall rec that is tweaked for individuality and sent to each school you're applying to?

I was thinking the latter, but I wasn't quite sure. If you read this, I love you.

You give them the forms for each school. In most cases the professor will write one essay (for the common application form), then tweak it for the school in question if you ask them to and give them information about it (let's say, for example, that you know college X puts an emphasis on classroom engagement whereas college Y likes to see students who are very politically conscious).

I'm guessing, however, that 1) explicitly knowing the tweaks that would make any difference for college X is rare, and you are bound to apply to very similar schools anyway, and 2), your teacher will not have the time to craft a completely new recommendation for each school.

In conclusion, it doesn't really make much difference either way. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Good luck! :)
