An email from Jack Kent Cooke Foundation

Yesterday my daughter received an email from JKC foundation. Foundation said based on her achievements she may be eligible for a scholarship. I got intrigued and looked into web site. The top income limit is around $95,000 us dollars. I see majority of students who receive awards have income averages around $35,000.

While I understand it is very competitive to get the scholarship. Competition may be fierce. My question is that our gross taxable income is around $93,000 for each year from last two years. Would we be eligible based on income? Please let me know. Thanks

My daughter applied to JKC and we have similar incomes, so I believe the answer to your question is yes, you are eligible. My child made it to the second round, but no further. How much our income counted against us I do not know, unlike the Elks, JKC does not put out the judging rubric.

The competition is definitely fierce for ALL scholarships.

My foster son won Gates, and there were 57,000 applicants and only 1,000 winners.

Your best way to save money on college is to choose schools where your child is a big fish and attracts merit money, which has no impact from income.

They do stress that most recipients are Pell eligible and I surmise that with a 93k income you would need major extenuating circumstances.

Something to keep in mind with this scholarship and many others is that they only cover unmet need, not EFC.
