An email from NYU Financial Aid: Can I assume?

Last Friday, I received an email from NYU’s Office of Financial Aid. It read…

Dear Applicant,

We have received the 2018-2019 CSS Profile that you filed as a result of your inclusion of NYU’s school code (2785). At this time, we are unable to match your CSS Profile application to your admissions application, the Common Application. If you have decided not to apply to NYU, you may disregard this email.

If you do still want to be considered for financial aid and submitted your Common Application by the admissions deadline, it is important that you reach out to us as soon as possible so you don’t lose the opportunity to be considered for scholarship. Please call our office any time during business hours and a financial aid counselor will be happy to assist you. Please note that need based scholarship eligibility is determined for students who are admitted and who submitted their complete financial aid applications on time.

Please take quick action as appropriate so that we can help ensure that you are reviewed fully based on your financial aid eligibility…

Fortunately, I got the problem settled (it was an error on their end), but my parents are wondering if the email means there’s a high chance that I have been admitted. My dad doubts that they would’ve sent such an email if I had not.

I don’t want to assume anything and get my hopes up but I could not help but wonder the same thing. So I was wondering, approximately how long before the release does NYU finish reviewing applications?

Thank you!

Don’t get your hopes up. Sorry Dad!

The Fin Aid office works on aid packages while the admissions office decides about admission. They want the aid packages organized so as to send them out at the same time as the admission offers. And yes this means that those folks in Fin Aid draw up a whole lot of packages every year that end up being tossed when the students aren’t admitted.

Thank you for that!

Seems like a reasonable guess, in the realm of 50/50. Unless people have inside info, we don’t know. Do they release some before they’re done reviewing all? NYU admits three times more than matriculate (2/3 choose to go elsewhere, or can’t afford attending with the offered financial aid).
