An embarrassing question about Graduate School

I was thrilled to be accepted to graduate school, but unfortunately, I'm struggling in one of my classes. Bad. I am debating withdrawing, because the likelihood of me getting even a semi decent grade is incredibly small. I had one 'W' on my undergraduate record, and it didn't pose an issue. However, I imagine it's a lot more serious when you're a graduate. Just how terrible does a 'W' look as a graduate? Could it ruin my graduate studies or prevent me from pursuing a doctorate one day?

Thanks in advance.

how many courses are you taking. Are you part-time or full time? A W as a graduate student is much the same as when you are an undergraduate as long as there is a good reason and you show that you can do the work at a later date.

You need to check your department policies and also check your funding source (which is usually the same thing). A single W is not usually a big deal so long as it does not derail your progression in the program. Multiple W’s may be a problem - some schools may limit how many W’s you can have - but that is down the road.

I think the more important issue for you is to figure out why you are struggling with a particular course on grad school than worrying about a W on your transcript. How does this course fit onto your graduate program? Is it a requirement? Have you talked to the professor and asked for help?
