Hi guys! That is my first semester in Cal. Unfortunately, I mistakenly chose a course that I am not passionate about and I am about to fail in that course. That is a music course. I am going to study engineering, though, which is completely unrelated to music. Will this "F" in transcript in my freshman year greatly hurt my further application to graduate schools or companies?

I am also really interested in these answers. I don’t have a specific answer about how it will affect graduate school applications. BUT I have heard that you can retake the class and the new grade will replace the F in the GPA? Just not on the transcript, though. That might be a thing you can look into if you’re worried about GPA.

Also, I’m not 100% sure of this, though, but I think I’ve read some things like that a couple times. Can anyone confirm?

It’ll probably be a little awkward on your applications and will be a drag on your overall GPA.

You can retake the class and the new grade will place it. On your transcript, there will be an asterisk of some sort indicating that you retook the class.

Thanks, Batman17. Actually I take it Pass/Not Pass. What will the situation be? Would you suggest me to retake it? If so, should I take it again with P/NP or Letter Grade?

Hey, singh2010. Thanks for your reply. You mean the guys (A0 and recruiters) who read my transcript will only give a frown and then simply look thru it, right?

Thanks, guruofgreatness. It is interesting there is difference between F and NP. Would you like to tell me something about the difference" thanks. I don’t know it though…

Retake it. Or try to appeal to the dean if you have a reason, which you have to do before finals week so it could be too late now. talk to ur teacher too. maybe they can help you out cuz most people dont want their students to fail if they have a heart.

not recommended - I thought your simpleton subject would be an easy A, I have no interest in it nor even much respect, but now I find that I might actually fail. Can you pass me?

It would be better if at least part of the reason is an inability to relate to some aspect of music, maybe some personal traits such as being tone deaf, or some other reason that suggests you have respect for music and the instructor, engaged in a good faith attempt to do well, and encountered unexpected problems. Maybe you thought you would do well in music but discovered it isn’t a good fit for you - showing a little regret about that outcome? Maybe you didn’t realize how much theory and terminology and rigor were needed to do well in music, thinking it enough to care artistically, thus had underestimated what it would take to do well? Those attitudes might engender enough pity to squeak by with a P, but if your explanation shows you look down on the subject and expected to fly through it with no effort, you are insulting the person who holds your fate in their hands.

Well do you have anything to show for it? If you’ve been taking notes when it’s optional and you can show that to the teacher that would probably show them that u tried. and show them whatever else did…dont make it the topic of your convo but just a little side thing. if u didn’t do anything all semester than uh lol u’ll have to figure somethin out.

just be like i worked really hard but it was hard for me or something idk. lol
