I've been reading a lot about the importance given to rigour of coursework in high school... I wonder how this works for internationals?
For instance, in India, students choose one of three streams- commerce, humanities, and science.
Is any one considered more rigorous by colleges- since course rigour should not be associated with subjects taken? Is there a disadvantage to taking commerce or arts?

Anyone? Help required…

Rigour of courseload should be taken in context with your school, wheather you are taking advantage of all the tough courses that are being offered in your school. Being from India i know that it does not apply to the Indian school system, since you follow one of the three paths that you mentioned. There is nothing wrong in following the humanities path if that is what you intend to do in college. But if you are going to major in math and you don’t have a math cousre in your high school curriculum you are going to be at a disadvantage. Also if you want to better your chances you can always self study for AP exams and show your motivation and enthusiasm. I am not sure if AP exams are offered in India or not? hope this helps.

I have Economics and math- which is what I intend to pursue. The problem is that I also have accountancy and business studies, and I’m not sure where that fits in (teacher recs, for eg, are supposed to be from a teacher of languages, maths, sciences, and social studies) Where do my subjects fit in? Does it mean I can’t get my a/cs teacher to write a reco.?

I need answers!

No, in my school, I know they mark “most rigorous” for everything and then explain that all three are equally different in their own ways.

That’s a relief!

In my honest opinion, APs should be taken as the poster above rightfully suggested. Its not too hard; you can self-study them.

A lot depends on the university you are planning to apply to.

Science is definitely more rigorous.
But that doesn’t matter. You won’t take Science if you want to be a CA. It totally depends upon your interest. However, if you’re undecided, then I’d suggest you go for Science since it opens up more options (But, but, but remember you must have an aptitude to do decently well in science) If you don’t like science or can’t score then take up commerce!

In short, everything depends on what you want to pursue and you will not be at disadvantage if you opt for commerce or arts!
