Hi, I was wondering if CMU students from different academic departments -e.g.Mellon College of Science or the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences- have the possibility to transfer into a BCSA program? Or does anyone know whether a BSA student can internally transfer into BCSA? I know that internally transferring into a BXA program is a very challenging task for all students; especially, when getting into BCSA, I heard that applying students need to be admitted to both CFA (College of Fine Arts) and SCS (School of Computer Science). But does that mean transferring into BCSA is a NEVER to students who are in departments besides SCS and CFA?

Were there any cases that students from different academic departments successfully moved into BXA(BCSA) programs?

To some who might think this discussion is stupid, I apologize in advance.

Thanks!

It is possible to transfer into a BXA program once you are in the university. It is not unheard of, just requires a clear reason why you want to pursue the specific dual degree and academic proof that you will be able to handle it. This usually requires building connections with the professors and advisers involved. I know BCSA is relatively new and a tad harder to transfer into than most, but it is not impossible.

Hi! Over half of the BCSA students are actually internal transfers–it’s definitely a possibility. If you talk to your advisor before starting school, they can ensure that you’re on the same track as an actual BCSA student. There is also a new program called IDEATE, which provides a (much better, imo) interdisciplinary approach to technology & art that you can get a minor or concentration in addition to your major. If you’d like more information, I’m currently studying both CS & Art at CMU and would gladly answer any questions you have via PM.
