An irritating post: my chances?

I know these posts are irritating, but I'm really not sure of anything. And no, I'm not about to list perfect 800 board scores, a 4.0 UW GPA, and one billion and twenty-two thousand page EC list. I'm just a normal (well, very strange in real life, girl).

And so it goes:

Caucasian female from middle-class suburb in Pennsylvania. Highly ranked high school, 1900 plus students. Number one student in my class has a 4.62 weighted, I believe, to put things in perspective.

4.155 W, 3.8 (?) UW, 45/400 (top 11 percent, I believe)
2020 SAT 1 (hopefully I’ll raise it to a 2150) (770 Writing- 12 essay, 2 MC wrong) That’s my strong point, but unfortunately, they aren’t really looking at that)
Graduate with 5 AP (I received a 4 on English Lang Comp)
Pretty strong (but not great) course load (upward trend with GPA junior year-4.36 W); honors/seminars/AP
Haven’t taken SAT II yet

EC:

Editor-in-chief of Newspaper: yay! (highly ranked public school with 1900 + students)
Editor-in-chief and re-founder of the school literary magazine (published periodically)
Founder of the Literature Club (President) (10,11,12)
Co-founder of the Asian Awareness Club (11,12)
Best Buddies Associate member (9,10,12)
Library Aid (12th): involves one-two hours per day of shelving/cataloguing/etc.
Participant in the GIFTED (accelerated) program: 4th through 12th grade
Spanish National Honor Society
National Honor Society
Studying Japanese (Level 1) at language school in nearby city (every Saturday, 2 hours); unfortunately, my parents couldn’t afford a college course (checked out one at Villanova, but too pricey)
Community service is pretty strong (estimated time is unknown, as of now)

Employed at Bagel Shop (essentially a sandwich shop) for three years, part-time (9th through 11th)

Plan to major in Anthropology and minor in East Asian studies (focus in Japanese language)

I left out all EC that aren’t as significant (I.E focused on leadership roles; I suppose I‘ll include them on my application)

I know that I’m not especially strong as a candidate right now, but I’m hoping that with a 2150 SAT and solid grades in my APS next year I’ll have a chance. My essays/EC will most likely be my strong point. It’s definitely my character/effort put into explaining passion for literature/asian culture that’ll be beneficial.

Reach:
NYU
Vassar

Reach (match if SATs rise):
Bryn Mawr

Match:
Smith (I think?)

Safety:
UMASS- Amherst

If anyone has any other suggestions, they’d be greatly appreciated. I kind of half-assed this post, but only because my mother’s screaming at me to clean my room. Sorry for being so bland! Also, I sliced open my middle finger with a staple; as result, I’m not able to type proficiently.

Amherst is your safety? -_- Damn.

What? No! UMASS-Amherst. It's a satellite campus of UMASS (the acceptance rate's about 70 percent, and the mean SAT score is pretty low.)

I wish Amherst were my safety! Jeez! Well, actually, Amherst isn't a safety for anyone, but that's besides the point.

I was like WOAH....but I think you have a great chance but then I am no expert. Your employment at a bagel shop sounds pretty funny :) If its unpaid I guess its community service but it was paid why bother putting it :O I can say I was the best burger flipper in BK and I can also say I was the fastest domino's boy but I won't say it....I was paid! :-O

I wish I was editor in chief.....I could have been if it wasn't for this white dude... ( no offense to white dudes ) He has taken @$$ kissing to the next level. I believe he has serious potential to increase it more.

if u bring it up to 2100 you'll get in for sure, if nor, try ED

Well, I'm not actually planning on writing what I did for the Bagel Bistro; it's actually a very terrible little sandwich/bagel shop that has made my life miserable for the past three years. I've actually written stories about the Bistro (comedic ones), expressing my contempt. You're supposed to put employment, if constant, on your college application, I think?

It's funny that editor-in-chief is such a coveted positstion! Unlike my other activites, which involved a lot of work on my behalf, I just kind of fell in place as editor-in-chief. I'm extremely happy, as there's nothing I love more than editing (I'm a horrible grammar nazi, even though I made some errors in my post), but it's kind of funny how the woman who runs the paper (after I'd been an entertainment editor and writer for a year or two) was just like, "Hey, you, you'll be editor-in-chief next year." I guess it's all about the politics! But I guess I shouldn't complain!

I don't think I was a very good employee at the Bistro (actually, present tense, because I still work there). I'd always argue with customers.

Ah, I tend to write a lot because I'm pathetic and have nothing better to do. Good luck on your college search (or whatever you're doing).

Thank you for your help mattistotle! I have two twenty-one hour plane rides in the next week or so; hopefully that time will be dedicated to SAT prep. I'm pretty sure I can get a 2100. (It's my math that's killing me.)

I actually almost cried for that position you know......

I agree with mattistotle. mile, where in PA are you from? I went to Wilson High School (outside of Reading).

Intotherain: My response is a big, sorrowful frowning face. If you'd been at my school I would've let you be co-editor-in-chief.

Cardinal: Thanks, yeah, I'm definitely aiming for a 2100 or 2150. Hopefully I'll be able to pull it off. I'm from West Chester, PA. I'm not familiar with your exact location, but I've been to outlets in reading (not that it's relevant).

I think you have a really good chance. which school are you applying to, CAS?

Everyone's being pretty nice, but I'm pretty anxious; I mean, I see all these people posting with very impressive stats (number 2/400 or 10/350). Also, it seems as though many people applying to ivy leagues apply to NYU as a sort of safety school; it seems as though it'd make the pool pretty competitive.

Thank you though, nirvana33.

And yes, I'm applying to CAS for Anthropology/East Asian Studies.

Why are going Anthropology for NYU its ranked 13.... No rankings are 100% accurate but it generally gives you an idea how the school does at that area doesn't it? If you want Anthropology University of Michigan is ranked #1 and University of Chicago is ranked #2

http://www.stat.tamu.edu/~jnewton/nrc_rankings/nrc41.html#area35

well, i'm not ONLY trying to be nice when i say that you do have a good shot.. =) I honestly think so. CAS is easier to get into than Stern, which is where most of the ivy leaguers and high-stat students tend to be applying. The CAS applicant pool isn't as competitive as the Stern pool, and since your majors aren't particularly high demand majors, i really think you'd get in based on those stats. I've seen applicants who are far below you in the stats/ec department (myself included), who have gotten in.

intotherain: Well, I'm not entirely sure that I'm going to stick with Anthropology anyway, so I'm not selecting my college around my major; I keep going back and forth between Anthropology and a major pertaining to English (editing). Ah, I'm so indecisive.

nirvana33: Thank you for all your help/encouragement!
