This is the first post I've made here at College Confidential. I started lurking here last summer before I started college, but never returned until just recently. Now I'm speaking from the point of a returning sophomore and I hope you take this to heart.

I've seen a lot of posts on this board that are quite frankly ridiculous. When you're done with your college career, it's not going to matter how many bedsheets you brought, or what posters you put up on your wall, or whether you use notebooks or binders, or how you met new people. Freshman year is all about new experiences...what I'm trying to say is DON'T OBSESS OVER EVERY DETAIL. Not everything in your freshman year is going to go right (believe me, I know). You need to figure some stuff out on your own--don't just rely on the guidebooks and websites.

Now, I'm not trying to knock CC and this board...a lot of the posts have generally helpful information (the ever-present Laptop vs. Desktop debate springs to mind). But other topics are a little unneccesary.

As you go off to college this fall as a freshman, just remember...this is your experience and no one elses. If you don't sweat the small stuff, you'll do fine.

Well, that's my rant. Applaud or flame away.

applaud Not that I would know. I think cc'ers have known since they were 2 they wanted to go to Yale, so they plan out every detail of their life

I am going into my freshman year. Personally I dont know why these kids are worried about every little detail. SOme of these posts offer good advice but some are just plain rediculous. I am going into this experience without a worry people need to stop stressing and have fun and learn along the way. Thats what college is all about

It's summer and people are bored and anxious for college to start in a few weeks (for some, a few days). Since people have nothing else to do, they come here (myself included).

I applaud. Some of the recent threads that you mention, I might add, were started by some people who I wouldn't really consider ready for college yet....

Uh, some people on this board apparently find this stuff helpful (or just fun to think about). If you don't like it, don't read the threads. It's really quite simple.

Yep some are ridiculous, but I wouldn't consider your entire list of examples to be so. What posters people are going to hang, how many sets of sheets planned, and ways to meet people are fine conversations. Those come as as just curious inquiries to me and not stressing -- it is summer and just some stuff people wonder about. Those weren't "what's the norm and is expected" type of threads, but rather "I'm planning on this, what about you?" sorts of inquiries.

Now speaking of truly ridiculous posts, one particular poster comes to mind. Gee, what brand of pen and type should I use?

I agree mostly. I know I've been stressing over details a lot lately. I guess it's easier to think about school supplies than it is to think about leaving my family. Plus I'm just anal.

I think a lot of people, myself included, are a mixture of bored, curious about what other people are doing, and so anxious to start that we want to think and talk about anything college oriented within our control (stuff, people, classes etc.), and we are just curious about what it will be like. I think it's totally natural for someone to be interested in what the next year of their life could be like. Most people aren't obsessing, with the exception of the above stated "which pen brand, color, style should I buy? Will my teacher tell me how to wipe my butt?" :p

i love this board, most stuff is really useful. i love hearing from college students, things that id normally ask an older silbling (if i had one)

I also think most of the threads here are useful, maybe not to a college sophmore but to someone. If a topic is totally useless, then no one would have thought of posting it... and even if they did, there would be no replies and no one would find them worth reading, nor would they post an entire thread about them. :D I don't think it's worth stressing over, really. If the board is helping people then, great!

I agree with most of this. I'll be a freshman and if my Mom bought all that stuff for my room I'd be MORTIFIED. what the hell is a egg crate bed topper anyway??? check out some of those parents threads. whew. theyre stressin.....but mainly i think they just like to chat and obsess with other parents. My school set up a blog on the college website for incoming freshman to get acquainted by email and find your roommate. some kids in Chicago and NY are have meetups before opening day. that's pretty cool are other colleges doing this???
