An Odd Situation

Last year, I applied to some private high schools in my area using the SAO application. Now, the area I live in is very competitive, and upon hearing of my acceptance to Lawrenceville, many of the parents I know wanted me to help their kids through the process (I politely refused, as I really had no idea what I was doing). Now, one of my essays was a tribute of sorts to a major figure in my life, and my parents asked if they could have a copy of it to show to people who knew him. However, without my knowledge, my mom recently sent a copy of that essay to the mother of one of my friends who will be applying in the 2019-20 cycle. Should I be worried about anything? Could him ‘taking inspiration’ from my essay hurt me, him or both?

Honestly, I know how petty my concerns sound, but I’m still a bit paranoid.

I’d be worried that mom does not know the difference between yours, mine, and ours. But that was not your question.

In terms of the essay, it will never hurt you. It will hurt him if he does not know the difference between inspiration and plagiarism.

If your friend copies your essay you may have a problem because the only place they could’ve gotten it from is you. Read your school’s handbook to see how they handle plagiarism. You may want to show it to your mom so she understands the risks.
