An "old" visitor coming by

just saying hi, as a previous AU parent. i haven’t been here since 2009, and came to visit tonight. (maybe a little cabin fever with all the snow and ice!) i’m here if i can help anyone, having an AU grad.

Any lessons learned, things to avoid, or things you wish you had known?

I was just wondering if AU is rolling or April 1st decision date?

It’s April 1st. Every passing day i get more and more nervous…

hi all~ so remember, this is the Mom’s perspective! my d. remains in DC, working! still plans eventual grad school. if she were talking to you you, i think she’d say something like: a GREEN, grassy campus, yet IN DC; amazing career and guidance center…helped her with on-going resume prep, and internships. (she had 3 while at AU, one during her study abroad.) it’s very international. exciting in its diversity. it obviously has a campus, and campus life, but is (like all other DC schools) very enriched by proximity to DC, in whatever way you’d want…culture, shopping, nightlife, etc.
after freshman year(and you can remain in the dorms) there are reasonable apartments near by. shuttle to metro is good. i can’t say much more unless i have a sense of your interests, possible majors, etc. feel free to PM me. best of luck!

How would you/your daughter described the typical student at AU? I have looked at the videos online and all the girls seem to dress fashionably, seem very mature, outgoing and poised, confident and very focused on their goals. Are most students like this? Would this school be a good fit for a less confident, less outgiong kid who does not know yet what they want to do with their life and needs help finding their way?

hi pamom~
i’ll do my best with this…kids DO NOT ALL DRESS!!! that was one of the many reasons why mine chose it above some others in the area. the school seems to attract a lot of kids with focus, but then again, AU encourages their focus, BUT that doesn’t mean they all “know what they want to be when they grow up!” when my d was there, AU’s career and counseling center ranked in top 10, i think, in Princeton Review. i think the active attention to getting students out and about(internships, etc.) CREATES focus for kids, by helping them know what they like as well as DON’T like!
i think “less confident” students are everywhere. i think of greater importance is the overall “fit”, feel of the school…it’s very international…many students from other countries. not a “football school”. focus tends to be, as i’ve said, on DC and what it offers. does this help? feel free to PM me…the reason i say this is that i’m not on CC too often, and the PM alert comes to my email. hope to talk again.
