Okay, until one of the super moderators gets around to it, can I please ask people to be more civil? Calling someone a ■■■■■ does not advance the merits of your argument. Until DartmouthAlum starts raving about the merits of the IHOP in Hanover, I think you should take his/her credentials at face value. (Striving for a bit of levity here.) I disagree with DartmoutAlum, but I do not think s/he has belittled anyone: the posts may have denigrated the college generally, but the reputation of the school is sort of the topic of this thread, no?

It certainly did happen at Oberlin but the difference is the alumni and parents were not on the side of the racists, homophobes, and rapists. They did not complain that their tuition money was being wasted when the college set aside a day to convene about the events on campus. And they certainly did not make comments that could be construed as blaming the victims.

And who wrote this, Bayrunner? The lady doth protest too much, me thinks!

I hesitate to join this battle – but … the Bayrunner post was NOT a personal attack. Please stop. Debate the merits.

Dumbo11, here are about 3500 people, many of whom are current students, who are unhappy with Dartmouth, and who believe Dartmouth is basically a thing of the past, at least for undergrads. They are trying to change things, to get Dartmouth back to what they envisioned when they chose the school. I am far from the only one disenchanted with Dartmouth. https://www.facebook.com/groups/defendingdimensions/

Thank you for reposting my post!

Uh, no. Fred, I think defendingdimensions is the exact opposite of you.

DefendingDimensions is accurate about the problems with Dartmouth. I have expressed many of the same issues. We are coming from different places in that they love Dartmouth and believe they can effectuate a change, whereas I don’t love Dartmouth and do not believe it is going to recover from the problems it faces.

Not atypical of certain members of “the Dartmouth community”: Denigrating the very professors charged with teaching us and attacking anyone who dissents from the “mainstream” view.

It’s little wonder that Robert Frost and Joseph Campbell each left campus after less than a year because they were disillusioned with the paucity of intellectual life among students, and put off by campus social ills.

I observed gross intolerance when I was on campus, and one can read about dozens of egregious incidents in the campus and national press that have occurred over the past few years.

And, of course faculty with tenure would be more likely to speak up; that’s one of the points of tenure!

Thread is veering off track. Since it seems that we are unable to refrain from name calling and personal attacks thread is being closed
